So...Can You Run a 3-Phase Machine on Single-Phase Power?
Yes.
In many cases, a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) can make it happen.
While VFDs are famous for controlling motor speed in factories, they're also incredibly useful for hobbyists and small businesses trying to power three-phase equipment from a single-phase electrical service.
Why Does Derating Matter?
Most three-phase VFDs expect power to be shared across three incoming phases.
With single-phase power, that load is concentrated across only two input terminals, increasing the current through parts of the drive.
Choosing the properly derated drive helps prevent:
- Overheated input components
- Excess current through the rectifier
- Reduced drive life
- Nuisance trips
- Potential equipment damage
It's one of those situations where buying the "next size up" isn't overkill, it's good engineering.
Don't Size It by Horsepower Alone
One of the biggest mistakes people make is simply doubling the horsepower.
While that sometimes works, our VFD manufacturers recommend sizing the drive based on the motor's full-load amperage (FLA) instead of horsepower whenever possible. Their single-phase derating charts are designed specifically for this purpose.
The motor nameplate is your best friend here.
Check:
- Voltage
- Horsepower
- Full Load Amps (FLA)
- Frequency
Those numbers will tell you far more than horsepower alone.
