There's a Lot Going On Behind the Flame

Behind every controlled flame is a collection of components working together to start, monitor, control, and safely shut down the combustion process.

When you’re dealing with fuel gas, high temperatures, and industrial equipment, you want a few safeguards making sure everyone is behaving themselves.

Enter the Burner Management System (BMS) and Combustion Control System (CCS).

Think of it this way:

  • Burner Management System (BMS) = Safety Supervisor:

  • Combustion Control System (CCS) = Operations Manager

Behind both are the sensors, controls, safety relays, VFDs, alarms, and other components constantly monitoring what’s happening in the system.

Our latest blog takes you behind the control panel to look at how it all works together: Read now.

The Safety Side:

First Things First: Is There Actually a Flame?

When a burner is supposed to be firing, knowing whether a flame is actually present is kind of important.

If the expected flame isn't detected, the burner management system can respond according to its designed safety sequence.

Making Heat Is Easy. Controlling It Is the Trick.

Getting something hot isn't necessarily the hard part.

Getting it to the right temperature, keeping it there and repeating the process consistently? That's where controls come in.

Industrial controls provide the feedback needed to monitor what's happening throughout a combustion process while VFDs and motor controls can help manage fans, blowers and other supporting equipment.

Because "I think that looks hot enough" isn't much of a process-control strategy.

“The best way to make a fire with two sticks is to make sure one of them is a match.”
