The Basics On Hygienic Design And The Light Tower That Qualifies

Let's start with what hygienic design is. As you might guess, it is the hygienic and cleaning-friendly design of all machinery, equipment and components in areas where food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and cleanroom production is processed.

To be hygienic the design must prevent weak spots that could increase hygiene related dangers or the risk of infection and disease transmission.

Hygienic designs lower the dangers of food poisoning, contamination and product recalls which means that reliable hygiene standards must be rigorously enforced.

We have a number of manufacturers that offer hygienic solutions, including Baumer Electric and Werma, in this blog I am going to focus on the Werma CleanSIGN LED industrial stack lights.

The Werma CleanSIGN has been developed especially for the food and hygiene market. CleanSIGN meets the high requirements of hygienic design which includes a smooth service and quality materials.

Advantages you can expect from the Werma CleanSIGN industrial light towers:

  • Food safe materials (FDA approved) and resistant to cleaning agents
  • Cleaning friendly and hygienic design for easy cleaning and disinfection
  • EHEDG and Fraunhofer IPA approved
  • IP67/IP69K protection rating
  • Fulfills Air Cleanliness Class 2 for Cleanroom applications in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14644-1
  • Maintenance-free LED technology with a long life duration of up to 50,000 hours
  • Pine Tree Clip® for quick and simple fixing

What Do The Colors On A Stack Light Mean?

This may seem somewhat obvious depending on your experience, however, I've had people ask and I thought it would make a great blog.

Let's start with what an industrial light tower is used for. The main use is to alert or grab the attention of an operator or supervisor to get them to respond to an issue on the line. They can also be used to show things are running well or that things are going to need attention very soon.

Here are the typical uses for each color:

Red Stack Light

Okay, I'm guessing most of us could guess red, yellow and green... but let's review it anyway.

Red generally means there is an event or condition that could cause a shut down. You are out of parts, there is a jam, an e-stop has been pushed, something happened.

Yellow Stack Light

Yep, you guessed it, this one is for a warning. We are almost out of parts, something has been interrupted, etc.

Green Stack Light

Stick with me. Yes, green means everything is running smoothly!

Blue Stack Light

Now we are getting to the colors I'm generally asked about. Blue is usually used as a request for maintenance or a supervisor. Blue can mean you are waiting for service or the work is caught up so the machine is paused.

Personally, this light just reminds me of the 'blue light special' for those of you that remember Kmart back in the day. Actually maybe they still have that?

Clear (White) Stack Light

This one can mean anything you want and usually used for something specific to your application. A completed cycle or batch, you are running within production parameters or any number of things.

Of course, you can also differentiate between a solid on or flashing color plus add audible alarms into the mix as well.

Marshall Wolf Automation is a large industrial automation distributor for all the top brands of industrial stack lights (also called light towers, signal lights and tower lights!).

We are authorized for Patlite light towers, Menics light towers, WERMA USA, IDEC light towers and more.
