Everything You Wanted To Know About Current Transformers

The Current Transformer (CT) is used to sense AC current in single-phase or three-phase mains circuits. The current transformer typically has a 1A or 5A AC secondary that connects to a current, power or energy meter.

This allows the meter to be located away from the mains wiring. Current transformers are available in a variety of sizes and styles, with standard ratios of 50:5 to 4000:5. Split core models easily retrofit around existing wiring. Solid core models offer lower cost.

Some monitoring systems are supplied with current transformers that have a voltage output. The full scale on these devices is not standardized, but usually is between 0.3-2V AC.

Despite the lack of standardization, there are several advantages to using a CT with a voltage output:

  • It eliminates the need for heavy leads or a high VA rating
  • The voltage output also allows a greater distance between the CT and the mete
  • An open secondary loop on a 1A or 5A CT can produce hazardous high voltage. Models with a voltage output are clamped to a safe level.

Current transducers also use a solid-core or split core transformer to sense an AC current. They have circuitry to convert the output to a low level DC signal, either volts or mA. Models with a DC voltage or 1mA current output may be self-powered. Models with a 4-20mA DC output usually require an external power supply.

Carlo Gavazzi offers Current Transformers and an analog output version.

New Baumer O500 Series Ideal For This Application!

Question:

I've been asked to purchase a few photoelectric sensors for detecting a reflective strip placed on a test track from a moving car.

Imagine wanting to record when you've crossed a "finish line" or similar as you drive over it.  Another group here uses Baumer sensors for this task, but the sensors are not available to me for use or even to find out what part number they use!  So I'm asking for some applications help.

  • The sensor will typically be installed under a passenger car or SUV, so anywhere from 50-400mm distance from the mounting point to the ground.
  • We will have decent space to install in most cars, but smaller (without getting extreme) is going to be better.
  • We can provide 12V DC ( I like to see an operating range down to 9V if I can, and we can see up to 15V unregulated on that power supply), and I'd like to record the output in Volts, 0-5V DC  works well but we can work with larger output ranges..
  • Operating conditions may be wet at times, and the ability to live with some shock/vibration and ambient temperatures around 200F.
  • For a target we plan to either lay retro reflective tape directly on the track or apply that tape to a plate we can move around.
  • The car might pass over that strip at 120mph at times.
  • Finally, being under the car this sensor may occasionally get struck with small stones, etc, so it should have some degree of ruggedness.  If we hit something harder we've got more problems than the sensor, so no need to be bulletproof!!

If you can select a sensor for me I'd greatly appreciate it.  If there is some circuit completion to be done to get the output into something we can work with I'd appreciate your suggestion.

Answer:

The Baumer Electric O500.RR-11096090 meets your needs and is in a rugged IP67 package. This Baumer retro reflective photoelectric sensor is very small in size with many mounting options built-in.

If you’re looking for a simple retro reflective unit that can handle your environment this will do the job.

Tech Question Regarding Menics Rotating Lights

Question:

We are wanting to purchase a set of 10 of these Menics rotating lights, with buzzers, but need some information about required power packs for these lights.

Configured Part Number              Menics ASG-02-R

If we were to purchase the 12 or 24VDC lights, what batteries do these run on?   For example, would the 12 VDC light run on a pack of rechargeable AA batteries?  And do you supply the battery packs?   What’s the difference in brightness between the 12VDC and the 24VDC lights, or are they both the same?

We’d like to get these ordered ASAP, but need to know how we would power them, since these will be placed on mobile carts without large computer battery packs, for work in a warehouse facility.

Answer:

These industrial warning lights draw the following amperage.

12V DC : 0.7A

24V DC : 0.3A

Your power source will need to be able to handle at least this amount of current. As long as your battery configuration can provide the appropriate voltage and current this would work for you.

AA batteries offer 1.5 volts (1.2 volts on rechargeable) so you have to build a 10 battery array with rechargeable batteries and the higher the mAh of the battery the longer it will last between charges.

We do not offer battery packs.

The brightness at 12 or 24 volt would be the same and dependent on the power supply. As long as the appropriate voltage is maintained your brightness will not fade out.

Yes, We Even Get Involved In Landscaping Applications!

Question:

I am installing ten 11 3/4" square glass blocks as night lights along our driveway. I have forged the holders that will bury in concrete and they have a 3/4" groove in the bottom for the LED strip bar.

I will have them about 70" apart and will connect to one power source. How do you recommend connecting them. Do you have 12 volt available? Thank you!

My Answer:

Our Patlite CLA2S-24-CD is an IP69K waterproof LED light bar that costs just $97.20 each.

This LED light bar runs on 24 vdc and draws 208 mA per segment so you will need a 24 vdc power supply.

You can use our Delta PMC-24V075W1AA industrial DC power supply which is 115 vac in 24 vdc
75 watts (3 amp) output power supply to handle 10 units. They are $25.20 each.

Variable Frequency Drives and Generators

An email repsonse from: scott@wolfautomation.com

I received the following from technical support at AC Tech Lenze. He is looking at this as a backup generator that would turn on and off in certain circumstances. In your case this is our permanent power supply. Being that we do not sell generators I do not have a very good background in that area. By looking at the information below the main concern seems to be the phase to phase control coming from the generator. If the generator manufacturer can give you more detailed information on the output of the generator itself you would have to make sure we are getting what we need to maintain a smooth running AC drive/motor combination.

Although switching from line power to a backup generator is an accepted practice in many applications, there are some limitations you should be aware of pertaining to our Variable Frequency Drives. Many portable backup generators have a larger voltage swing on their phase to phase voltage input than our recommended phase to phase voltage tolerance which must be less than 2%. Although our AC Drives are equipped with surge guards in the input rectifier circuit, it may be necessary to use external protection for severe input disturbances such as surge arrestors. Larger variances cause greater ripple on the DC bus caps and this will damage them and other power components over time. Our drives need a minimum of 2 minutes between cycling of power. Otherwise it can damage the charge relay circuit or at the very least will blow the input fuses or trip the circuit breaker.

In cases where input power has “moderate” spikes in voltage which causes current surges, a 3% line reactor may help the situation.

Another solution is to add a voltage monitor with a suitable time delay. It has a protection trip level that shuts down in cases of under-voltage, over-voltage, a loss of phase and voltage imbalance between phases. This device ensures that our VFD will not see unbalanced input power or never be powered up until these other voltage tolerances and proper delay times are met.
