What does NEMA 3R mean?
NEMA 3R electrical enclosures are typically used in outdoor applications for wiring and junction boxes. This style of weatherproof enclosure provides protection against falling rain, sleet, snow, and external ice formation. Indoors they protect against dripping water.

I recently had a customer contact me saying his lathe started dancing around the shop... I sincerely hope you haven't had a similar experience but I thought I would share his story.
Answer:
I would suggest going with 230 volt single phase. You can use the Hitachi variable frequency drive X200-007NFU2 1 hp 230 volt single phase in 230 volt three phase out $160.48 (stock at Hitachi).
OPE-SRMINI $62.85 is the remote key pad offering for this unit. This is a cabled unit so you still have some distance restraints. The cables that are offered are the ICS-1A (1 meter cable) $53.57 or ICS-3A (3 meter cable) $57.15.
Question:
I own an old delta rockwell lathe. It is currently powered by a 1/3 hp swamp cooler motor, needless to say it's not enough. Life being life, I acquired a 220v/3phase 1hp 3.6 amp motor. My hopes would be to create a very powerful machine with both variable speed and reverse capabilities. I do have both 110v or 220v single phase available in my shop.
I know enough about electronics to be dangerous so I thought I should see if the compact Micro ac drive TECO EV/JNEV is what I need. Couple of questions. Housing looks over the top. I also have a Jet lathe that is powered similarly, it has no fancy enclosure and would it be possible to install the remote I described below on it also?
How hard would it be to set up a wired remote I could move around the machine to control the basic functions such as emergency stop, speed control, and reverse.
Just the other day I made a big mistake and a lathe started dancing around the shop, the only way to turn it off safely was to reach the switch with a stick!!!! Very SCARY!!!!! Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Anthony Prough

Is it really an age old question? Well no, but it is a legitimate question.

First, let's define the application. What type of motor are we controlling, HP, voltage, etc?
Is it a motor load that is frequently changing speeds or is it a desire to effectively minimize in-rush current, while controlling the ramp speed of the motor finally setting full rpm?
Well, if we are wanting to change speeds of an AC 3 phase industrial electric motor, then we have high performance AC drives from 8 different manufacturers to review; AC Tech LENZE, Delta Automation, Gefran, Fuji, Hitachi, TECO Westinghouse, U.S. Drives and WEG drives.
If we are trying to control an exhaust fan or process blower to obtain its required peak RPM, we would want to look at a 'soft start' motor starter, like the WEG unit shown to the right.
We have what you need to control your motors, call us today and we can help guide you to control bliss!

A recent newsletter I received from Delta Industrial Automation highlighted their VFD-E series of variable frequency drives used in elevator applications.
In the U.S. they estimate there are over 30,000 escalators with a national energy use of 2,600,000,000 kilowatt hours per year!

An escalator is similar to a conveyor belt, using a pair of rotating chains that pull a series of stairs in a constant cycle.
By connecting entry and exit sensors from the escalator to the variable frequency drive's internal PLC, the escalator could be stopped when it's not in use. It would then start when anyone walks on and offer safety alarms when someone entered the wrong direction.
The ability to control the continuous operation of the escalator would offer large energy and money savings!
Features of our Delta VFD-E series of high performance AC drives:

Do you want to save money and energy on your next portable pump system?
Instead of using traditional motor starters, use a variable frequency drive to power and control your portable pump cart. Not only do these types of drive excel at controlling industrial electric three phase motors on pumps, they are also like mini energy management solutions.
The sensorless vector style drives are used for constant torque and are great for positive displacement type pumps (gear pumps), as well as centrifugal pumps. Many variable frequency drive models are multi-type, meaning both vector type and volts to hertz type.
High performance AC drives are also ideally used for both indoor and outdoor applications and can be supplied with the proper enclosure for either environmental condition.
The variable frequency drives, like AC Tech Drives, Lenze and the other brands that Marshall Wolf Automation distribute, are available with 120/1/60hz input or 230/1/60 HZ power, making them ideal for small horsepower pumps used in outdoor applications where power choice would be limited.
In regards to larger horsepower, typically greater than 3 HP pumps, other models of 3 phase drives can be wired up for single phase when properly derated, ensuring that these components are rated for the higher current that will flow from the single phase input instead of the three phase input.
Simply put the basic formula is: (VFD current > Motor current rating (FLA)* 1.73). Please contact us at 800-325-9653 or visit www.wolfautomation.com for your unique application and we will help you choose the best variable frequency drive for your portable pump needs.

This was meant to be a simple post with basic definitions of line reactors and load reactors... sometimes good intentions end up on a different path!
There are many different opinions out there regarding line reactors and load reactors, here is a summary of what I found.
Line Reactors
Line reactors, also called line chokes, can protect sensitive electronic equipment from electrical noise created by the drive or inverter.
I saw many posts saying they use line reactors when the input voltage going to the drive is on the high side. Another said most manufacturers recommend them if the transformer feeding the variable frequency drive is anywhere from 10 to 100 times the rating of the drive.
Load Reactors
Load reactors are used on the output side of AC drives to soften high rates of change voltage applied to the motor windings.
Another description is that load reactors are used to smooth out spikes in long runs between variable frequency drives and industrial electric motors.
I saw a variety of recommendations regarding load reactors - some say install them when motors exceed 100' from the controller, others say 200'. I would suggest checking with the manufacturer to see what they recommend.
Of course, we also have in-house tech support that could help you out! You can always email techsupport@wolfautomation.com.
An easy solution when you are looking for load and line reactors is our MTE RLW series which are load/line reactors! Learn more about them here.

As of January 2012 MTE is using a 'green' paint alternative.
The 'green' paint, which is actually the color blue, is a modified water-reducible alkyd paint formula with a more user-friendly substance with low VOC, and free of lead and chromate hazards.
The new water-reducible paint will be used on the entire line of MTE line reactors, load reactors, Matrix passive harmonic filters, DC link chokes and motor protection filters.
The new paint is also pliable, fast-drying and has excellent durability to reduce problems with chipping.
