Many HVAC applications use scroll compressors because they find them to be more reliable and efficient than other compressor options. For example scroll compressors are generally 10% to 15% more efficient than piston compressors.
Interest in energy efficient HVAC solutions is growing which is making scroll compressors more popular. A problem with scroll compressors is they can take 3 to 4 cycles to start and there is a high inrush peak current until the compressor reaches its nominal speed/current.
While this high peak doesn't last for long, such a rapid inrush may cause issues such as lights flickering, triggering protection equipment, increased compressor noise and excessive stress on the compressor.
