AC TECH LENZE -SMV series drives have new sequencing parameters!

The AC Tech Lenze's SMV frequency drive is one of our most popular VFD's in the 60 HP and under market.

The drive is extremely popular, due to a wide variety of input power (voltage/phase) from 120V single phase to 600V 3 phase configurations.  The drive also comes in a variety of enclosure specifications from NEMA 1 to NEMA 4x indoor and outdoor rated models and even with an integral disconnect switch if desired.

One of the strongest features of the series is the ease of programming, extremely simple compared to most other competitors models.  The market now has even more capability with this versatile series.  What am I trying to say?  New and improved, well... not new, but with great improvements.

Sequence Parameters:  What does this mean?

Well, the NEW parameters P700; provides function consisting of 16 step segments, each individual step can have its own RAMP TIME, TIME SPENT IN INDIVIDUAL SEGMENT, and OUTPUT FREQUENCY.  The sequencer has three different modes to control how the drive moves through each individual step segment, IE: Timer transition, Step Sequence or Timer and Step Sequence.  Sections 4.5.9 through 4.5.9.3 of the Operating Manual explains the function and programming.

You can find the manual on our website at www.wolfautomation.com.   Next question is, what do I need this for? You can use it to do timing functions, time out blowers, pumps, cycle equipment; kind of like integrating a mini PLC or smart relay right into the drive.

When thinking about your next drive, think about AC TECH LENZE'S SMV series of VFD's, if this drive fits your horsepower requirements, consider this drive it's a winning combination that is hard to beat.  Wolf Automation is your Industrial Automation Distributor for VFD's -  7 different brands to meet your VFD needs.  Contact us today, we can help, call us at 847-658-8130 or email us at sales@wolfautomation.com

Single Phase Motors; A Common Question

Single phase motors are not controlled by varying the frequency in the same manner of a VFD but are controlled by varying the voltage.

The basic design of the capacitor start motor is to maintain synchronous speed. These motors are built with a centrifugal switch on board.

When the speed of the motor drops below a fixed speed the switch will make contact and fire the capacitor to bring the motor back up to synchronous speed. If you vary the voltage to these motors, the capacitor will keep recharging and trying to get the motor to the synchronous speed until the capacitor fails and the motor itself fails.

The best way to get the variable speed you require would be to replace the motor with a three phase motor and a VFD. The VFD can run off single or three phase power and will give you a three phase output to control the motor speed. We have vendors that offer extended warranty (up to three years) with the purchase of a motor drive package.

Variable Frequency Drive Recommendation

Customer Question:

For the attached fan selections from Twin City we need you to send us  variable frequency drive data sheet, wiring drawing  and quotation considering air freight for the same .

We have  three airflows as below needs to be achieved with varying the speed of fan as per sequence of operations for EF-14:

1.first speed -1000 l/s

2. second speed-720 l/s

3.Third speed-460 l/s

We need you to provide the following points mentioned below to interface VFD of EF-14 with the DDC Control Panel:

1.            On/ Off Command from DDC control Panel to VFD.

2.            Run Status from VFD to DDC Control Panel.

3.            Trip Status from VFD to DDC Control Panel.

4.            Analog (0-10v) signal from DDC Control Panel to VFD.

5.            Analog (0-10v) status from VFD to DDC Control Panel.

Answer:

Our AC Tech Lenze ESV152N02YXB will do the job as well as several other drives on our line card. The data on the word document and what is on the specification sheet are a little different. I am specifying a 230 volt single phase 2 hp (1.5 KW) drive Nema 1.

All six of the points are covered in this drive. This variable frequency drive offers multiple program set ups to handle the speed set points. External on/off commands as well as speed commands. There are relay outputs to communicate back to the DDC control as well as analog input and output capability.

VFD For A Milling Machine?

Question:

I am looking for a variable frequency drive for my milling machine. It is 3/4 hp, single phase, 120 or 230 volt and I would like to be able to use the forward/reverse drum switch that is on the machine.

Could you send me pricing and specs?

Answer:

A variable frequency drive will not work with your single phase motor. There are variable voltage controls, such as the Dart 55AC, that are rated to 15 amp output.

You must first verify that your motor is not a capacitor start motor before making this selection. Capacitor start motors cannot take a variable voltage input.VFD

All About AC Drives

Variable frequency drives are also known as variable speed drives, VFD's, inverters, adjustable frequency drives, motor controllers, AC drives and microdrives.

Variable frequency drives (VFD's) adjust your motor speed to closely match output requirements, typically resulting in energy savings of 10 to 50 percent.

Variable frequency drives save energy. One way they do this is by reducing motor speed as demand decreases.

Are you looking for a drive to run your three phase motor on single phase power? Our TECO EV/JNEV Series is our most popular single phase input AC drive. This is the ideal drive for hobbyists because it is low cost, readily available from stock and easy to use!

If you require a NEMA 1, general purpose drive then we would recommend our AC Tech Lenze SMVector series. Loaded with features yet still competitive, we can ship from stock today!

Read a great article by Tom Robbins of AC Tech Lenze, "Motor Drive Upgrades Boost Industrial Plant Performance" - discussing the value of upgraded motor controls and variable frequency drives (VFD) over conventional fixed-speed motor drives.

Are you working on an HVAC application?

Marshall Wolf Automation carries a full offering of variable frequency drives tailored for the HVAC market. We also have in-house tech support available to help you choose the best drive.

Do you need your variable frequency AC drive installed in an enclosure? We can do that too! We carry the popular Saginaw line of industrial enclosures and can add other components as well.

You can also take a look at this spreadsheet - we list our popular AC drives as well as the properly sized enclosure to go with it!

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Variable Frequency Drives:

Can I use a single phase motor with your variable speed drives?

No. All variable frequency drives work with 3 phase motors only. Single phase drives will operate on single phase power, however, the output is still 3-phase and will require a 3-phase motor.

How do I choose the proper size variable frequency drive (VFD)?

For most applications you want a variable frequency drive that has an output rating that equals or exceeds the nameplate current rating of the motor. If you base your selection on the motor horsepower rating you might get a VFD that is too small. For severe or unique applications please contact our in-house technical department.

How will using a variable frequency drive (VFD) save me money?

If you have an AC motor drive application that does not need to always run at full speed then you can reduce energy costs by controlling the motor with a variable frequency drive. VFD's allow you to match the speed of the motor to the requirements of your process. Basically variable speed drives allow you to consume less energy when your load requirements are less than full speed. Ideal in HVAC applications.

Variable speed drives also gradually ramp the motor up to operating speed which avoids abruptly starting the motor. This will reduce the stress on the motor and extend the life of the driven equipment and motor.
