Resetting a SM series AC TECH DRIVE after power failures.

If you have an SM series drive by AC TECH and have not had a plant power failure, it could be just a matter of time due to high electrical grid burdons or fortunate that severe storms have not struck your area.  But recently we had an existing customer experience this particular issue and they were now in a down situation and needed to get back up and running fast.  Unforturnately, a step by step procedure is not published, but the informantion is in the manual, just not in the best organized fashion.  Here is a quick reference guide for when this occures.

Per the Technicians at AC TECH:

“A manual reset is down by setting parameter P48(program) to a value “04” (reset 60hz).

To access the parameters hit mode, if prompted for a password the default password is “225”, then hit mode again and it will display P01 scroll up to P48, hit mode, scroll to a value of “04” and hit mode again to accept the new setting, the drive will then be successfully reset.

Keep in mind that any parameters that have been changed from their default settings will be reset and will need to be re-programmed so it may be helpful to record parameter settings prior to preforming a drive reset. Also, if it is an OEM unit set P48 to “03” (reset to OEM settings)".

All About Altech.

Even though i have worked with Altech for years, I didn't really know much about the corporation itself. As always, a quick search online gave me all the information I needed!

Altech Corporation was started in 1986 by the late Heinz W. Meise and focused on sourcing hard to find replacement parts for European manufacturing, automation and material handling equipment.

Once they realized the demand for European control components, Altech modified their strategy to become a multi-line supplier. Altech Corporation has a full staff available for technical support, design assistance and product certifications for North America. I know one of our great contacts at Altech, Klaus Tum, is very involved in a number of certification programs, including UL.

Lenze AC Tech and the Food Industry: Ultrasonic Slicing Application

Your source for Lenze AC Tech products is Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor.  Here is another application story from Lenze AC Tech involving the food industry.

Lenze AC Tech Positionservo 940 and SMD Cut the Price of Sausage Slicing

Lenze - AC Tech has worked closely with a specialist ultrasonic engineering company to solve the problem of making the perfect sliced sausage quickly and with minimal waste. A traditional cured continental sausage is difficult to cut very finely in an automated process because of the adhesive qualities of the meat, when a slice is made with a normal blade it tends to stick to the blade surface after the cut is complete.

The ultrasonic company, more used to sieving and sorting fine powders than chopping sausages, has applied its high frequency vibration technology to ensure the slices drop away from the blade neatly into the correct place each time.

The challenge was to integrate this high-end technology into a slicing machine and still meet the low-cost demands of the food processing industry. The solution was simple, using a 4 amp PositionServo 940 with encoder feedback, to control the position of the blade; the knife could be reciprocated in minimal time and with maximum speed and accuracy.

Driving through a precise Lenze MCS servo motor and gearbox combination and a cogged belt drive, the thickness of the slices can be controlled along the entire length of the sausage. The PositionServo is controlled via a  Lenze drive PLC unit and an HMI, in this case a 4” Lenze LCD grey scale touchscreen display.

By using an SMD drive to power the conventional AC motor that actuates the blade, the machine can be operated with domestic 110 – 240 V supply and still supply a super cost effective combination. Using CANopen to link all the machine control components also allowed minimal wiring to be used and resulted in a highly compact machine that is easy to program and very easy to use.

Why Your Motors Will Last Longer With KB Controls

If you are using permanent magnet type industrial electric motors, read this!

During certain conditions, such as frequent starting or accidental jam ups, the magnets in these motors can become demagnetized. This is something that happens over time and results in a loss of speed and efficiency at rated torque.

This is so common that your motor manufacturer probably publishes a specification sheet indicating demagnetization current for their motors!

To eliminate this potential issue KB Electronics has designed and patented the fastest current limit circuit available! It is a high-speed, direct-fed™, anti demagnetization circuit. Your motor will not become demagnetized when using any of our KB Electronics Penta-Power products!

Would you like to learn more? Our in-house technical support will be happy to help.

Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the complete line of KB Electronics!

Panel Interface Connectors decrease risk, allow PLC or PAC access without opening the control panel

The industrial control panel, containing network equipment and programmable automation controllers, is central to operations. Having access to these controls on a routine basis is required for production management and manufacturing execution system (MES). However, accessing this equipment requires precautions necessary for safety and regulatory compliance.

One of the issues with control panel access is the risk of arc flash. Arc flash occurs when there is a release of energy caused by an electric arc. This arc flash creates a blast that, within a few milliseconds, reaches several thousand degrees Celsius and in turn causes severe burns and often death.

OSHA, in hand with NFPA 70E standards, requires anyone opening control cabinets to have training and wear protective gear. The requirements also include planning and assessment of hazard potential as well as area marking to include protective boundaries and warning labels. Needless to say, these efforts add up to a lot of time and money.

An alternative involves the use of a pass-through to access the automation controllers. Panel interface connectors (PICs) or access ports enable a user to test and maintain equipment without opening the panel. This arc mitigation solution alleviates the need for personal protection equipment (PPE) and the need for a trained electrician to de-energize the system.

Panel interface connectors mount to the outside of the control panel. A typical PIC will contain a power supply (single, duplex, GFCI) and one or more connectors commonly used for programmable devices. These connectors include D-Sub, RJ45/Ethernet, USB, DeviceNet, and others. Often there will be a 3-amp reset as well.

While there are situations when a system needs to be shut down for full access, using a PIC saves time and money and allows for testing and maintenance in an energized state. Making adjustments to equipment and network systems and having the ability to monitor changes in short order is a huge time savings.
