Crouzet Millenium Application #2:
Water Treatment

Do you own a pool, manufacture swimming pools or service pools? This application is going to focus on controlling water quality in a swimming pool.

As a pool owner, manufacturer or user you need to:
  • Control physical filtration of water
  • Set fitering time in relation to the temperature of bathing water
  • Control the pH of the water
  • Control the level of water disinfection

Using the Crouzet Millenium 3 XD10 24VDC logic controller, pH probe, ORP (Redox probe) and Pt100 probe, plus an application specific analog extension you can do the following.

millenium for swimming poolsWater needs to be filtered regularly to keep it clear. The higher the temperature the longer this takes.

Both pH and Redox are measured using probes submerged in pipes, a container or an analysis chamber. These probes will analyze the presence of hydrogen and chlorine ions capable of oxidizing an electrochemical couple with the probe.

This oxidation generates an electrical voltage, expressed in mV, which is forwarded to the PLC. After a calibration process the PLC converts this into values for the pH and Redox.

Additional Crouzet Millenium 3 functions are available for other requirements including lighting control, vacuum pumps for the pool cleaning brushes and more!

Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the full line of Crouzet Millenium controllers, solid state relays, phase monitors and more!

Crouzet Millenium: Application Stories Part 1

Friday, September 23, 2011 by Beckie Bordenaro
Crouzet Millenium Application #1:
Heat Pumps

Make the most of natural energy - air, water - to heat or cool a hot water system or heating circuit.

Using a Millenium 3 logic controller and NTC and Pt100 accessories you can do the following:

The heat from the warm fluid is captured by a refrigerating liquid which is compressed to give it a pressure of 40 bar and a temperature of 140°.

In a heat exchanger, this refrigerating liquid then transfers its heat to water for a hot water system or a hot water tank.

Once this thermal exchange has taken place the fluid, which has lost both temperature and pressure, has its pressure further reduced by a solenoid valve which drastically reduces its temperature even more.

This fluid is then able to receive the heat from the hot source and the cycle is ready to begin again!

Variable Frequency Drives and Generators

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by Scott Welch
An email repsonse from: scott@wolfautomation.com

I received the following from technical support at AC Tech Lenze. He is looking at this as a backup generator that would turn on and off in certain circumstances. In your case this is our permanent power supply. Being that we do not sell generators I do not have a very good background in that area. By looking at the information below the main concern seems to be the phase to phase control coming from the generator. If the generator manufacturer can give you more detailed information on the output of the generator itself you would have to make sure we are getting what we need to maintain a smooth running AC drive/motor combination.

Although switching from line power to a backup generator is an accepted practice in many applications, there are some limitations you should be aware of pertaining to our Variable Frequency Drives. Many portable backup generators have a larger voltage swing on their phase to phase voltage input than our recommended phase to phase voltage tolerance which must be less than 2%. Although our AC Drives are equipped with surge guards in the input rectifier circuit, it may be necessary to use external protection for severe input disturbances such as surge arrestors. Larger variances cause greater ripple on the DC bus caps and this will damage them and other power components over time. Our drives need a minimum of 2 minutes between cycling of power. Otherwise it can damage the charge relay circuit or at the very least will blow the input fuses or trip the circuit breaker.

In cases where input power has “moderate” spikes in voltage which causes current surges, a 3% line reactor may help the situation.

Another solution is to add a voltage monitor with a suitable time delay. It has a protection trip level that shuts down in cases of under-voltage, over-voltage, a loss of phase and voltage imbalance between phases. This device ensures that our VFD will not see unbalanced input power or never be powered up until these other voltage tolerances and proper delay times are met.

Why Do You Need A Scroll Compressor Soft Starter?

Monday, July 11, 2011 by Beckie Bordenaro
Many HVAC applications use scroll compressors because they find them to be more reliable and efficient than other compressor options.  For example scroll compressors are generally 10% to 15% more efficient than piston compressors.

heat pump soft startInterest in energy efficient HVAC solutions is growing which is making scroll compressors more popular. A problem with scroll compressors is they can take 3 to 4 cycles to start and there is a high inrush peak current until the compressor reaches its nominal speed/current.

While this high peak doesn't last for long, such a rapid inrush may cause issues such as lights flickering, triggering protection equipment, increased compressor noise and excessive stress on the compressor.

Of course, this is where we come in! Carlo Gavazzi's soft starters reduce high inrush currents and their negative side effects.

Carlo Gavazzi has soft starters designed specifically for scroll compressor applications in both single and 3 phase models.

Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the full line of Carlo Gavazzi soft starters, sensors, monitoring relays, solid state relays and much more.

This general purpose three-phase energy meter is suitable for both active and reactive energy metering for cost allocation but also for main electrical parameter measurement and retransmission (transducer function).

Detachable display allows three installation modes - DIN rail energy meter, panel mounting, energy meter and transducer.

The nature of our voltage mains has changed greatly in the last 10 years. With the proliferation of non-linear loads such as inverters, power converters, switch-mode power supplies, and computers, there is a growing concern for the quality of our power sources.

Problems often arise which can cause equipment failure or shutdown resulting in significant costs and loss of production. Power quality problems can result in failure of compensation capacitors, tripping of fuses, over-heating of transformers and motors, failures of electronic equipment, and high neutral currents.

Energy costs are becoming a significant expense in most processes. With increased energy unit costs, decreased generating capacity, and the environmental concerns with the burning of fossil fuels, it is important that companies reduce their electrical consumption.

Marshall Wolf Automation, your industrial automation distributor – with Carlo Gavazzi offer a broad range of power quality meters and transducers which give early warning of power quality problems - allowing preventative action to be taken before a major failure results. Most of our products offer relay outputs that can be used to immediately shut down a piece of equipment if a certain threshold is reached. Another option is to connect to your PLC or PC control system to provide plant wide monitoring of power quality using 4-20 mA current signals or via RS485 or Ethernet communications.

We also offer a number of software products for monitoring of a network of meters and transducers. This allows at-a-glance viewing of your complete power system.  If you are in need of any Carlo Gavazzi sensors or car washing systems equipment, call us today!  800-325-9653.  We'd be happy to help you!
