Carlo Gavazzi offers new 3-phase switching solid state relays

Carlo Gavazzi is proud to announce their new RGC2 and RGC3 series of 3-phase switching solid state relays and contactors. They are an addition to the existing RGC1 single phase series of solid state relays and contactors, providing an innovative solution for 2 and 3-pole switching of 3-phase loads.

The product is intended to replace electromechanical contactors when switching speeds are quite frequent. Their compact size, easy installation and flexible configuration make these devices the ideal solution, especially when retrofitting. The RGC Series of solid state relays and contactors are designed for switching resistive as well as inductive loads and are UL Listed as Motor Controllers. Reliable operation is ensured by means of the integrated overvoltage protection, high I2t ratings and immunity conformance to industrial standards. Additionally, an innovative thermal design improves the product lifetime.

RGC2 and RGC3 Series devices are available in two frame sizes: 54mm or 70mm wide. RGC2, the 2-pole switching device, offers three current ratings of 25, 40 and 75AAC per pole at 40°C. While RGC3, the 3-pole switching device, offers five current ratings ranging 20 to 65Amps per pole. Optional monitoring feature offers possibility of detecting status of mains and load, as well as internal RGC failures: open or short circuit and overheating. Alarming is implemented with LED indication, electromechanical relay output and auxiliary transistor output.

If You Manufacture, Repair or Install Elevators, Read This.

I recently noticed a number of customers that are involved in the elevator market and decided to take a deeper look into what they are buying.

A basic elevator control panel would use a number of our most common, and most competitive, products:

  • Phase monitoring relays
  • Pushbuttons and e-stops
  • LED pilot lights
  • Disconnect switches
  • Variable frequency drives
  • Circuit breakers
  • Relays
  • Contactors

Marshall Wolf Automation has readily available stock on all of these components PLUS we can even handle the systems integration end of things by installing everything into an enclosure for you. Our in-house engineers can work with you create custom control panels competitively and quickly.

You can take a look at some of our products that were designed specifically for the elevator market here.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Current Transformers

The Current Transformer (CT) is used to sense AC current in single-phase or three-phase mains circuits. The current transformer typically has a 1A or 5A AC secondary that connects to a current, power or energy meter.

This allows the meter to be located away from the mains wiring. Current transformers are available in a variety of sizes and styles, with standard ratios of 50:5 to 4000:5. Split core models easily retrofit around existing wiring. Solid core models offer lower cost.

Some monitoring systems are supplied with current transformers that have a voltage output. The full scale on these devices is not standardized, but usually is between 0.3-2V AC.

Despite the lack of standardization, there are several advantages to using a CT with a voltage output:

  • It eliminates the need for heavy leads or a high VA rating
  • The voltage output also allows a greater distance between the CT and the mete
  • An open secondary loop on a 1A or 5A CT can produce hazardous high voltage. Models with a voltage output are clamped to a safe level.

Current transducers also use a solid-core or split core transformer to sense an AC current. They have circuitry to convert the output to a low level DC signal, either volts or mA. Models with a DC voltage or 1mA current output may be self-powered. Models with a 4-20mA DC output usually require an external power supply.

Carlo Gavazzi offers Current Transformers and an analog output version.

Simpson GIMA Digital Power Meters

GIMA 3 phase digital power meterThe GIMA series of digital panel meters measures values by replacing ammeters, voltmeters, switches, Power Factor kW indicators, kWh meters, etc.  The  GIMA series from Simpson Meters provides a single source of instrumentation for all measurement and metering requirements. The GIMA series offers accurate, high-speed, continuous measurements irrespective of harmonics and waveform interruptions.

Each GIMA Series unit can be used as  single-phase or 3 phase monitors. These meters feature “Auto-commissioning” to ensure that a reverse current transformer connection will not cause reading errors. Per-Phase kW and Power Factor allow a cross-phase connection error to be quickly and easily detected. The GIMA Series can also be tested at minimal loads. This is possible by the full four-digit resolution of single-phase values and five-digit resolution of three-phase values.

The GIMA series meters offer maximum visibility with a custom backlit LCD display. The display is fully visible under most conditions and from most angles. Clear display legends ensure simple readings with no multipliers required. To provide more value to this series, Simpson is offering a range of accessories such as serial communications, analog outputs and three-phase current transformers. Some of these accessories are retro-fit options. With the addition of these accessories, the GIMA series is able to fit within most applications.

Marshall Wolf Automation can provide all of your AC digital panel meter requirements.  Contact us today at 800-325-WOLF (9653).
