Zener barriers – cost saving and easy mounting Ex-protection
Zener barriers provide cost saving Ex-protection for various applications in process automation systems. The amount of energy transferred to the hazardous location is limited to a safe level incapable of igniting the explosive atmosphere. Pepperl+Fuchs offers a wide product portfolio of housing and connection styles, which include DIN rail, termination board mounted, and accessories for each application.
Zener barriers have to be connected to an IS ground.
The IS grounding can be realized several ways:
-
Isolated from the DIN- Rail
-
Via an isolated DIN-Rail
-
Via DIN-Rail
Field replaceable fuses provide a convenient means of disconnecting or open-circuiting the instrument loop without interfering with the wiring, making commissioning and maintenance operations much easier. Today I saw an ad from Pepperl+Fuchs in the March 2012 issue of DesignWorld regarding their DK12-11-IO series of contrast sensors.
We recently did a vendor focus product highlight on this series so I thought it should blogged about here as well.
The Pepperl+Fuchs DK12-11-IO series reliably detects differences in two colors of media with a powerful three-color light source.
These sensors are IO-Link compatible as well, you can learn more about IO-Link here.
This series also includes the 4-in-1 output - which delivers four output options from one sensor. Our customers love this feature as it helps you cut down on inventory!
Rugged, metal-frame housing and a connector that swivels for easy mounting complete this innovative series.

As one of the Midwest's largest Pepperl & Fuchs distributors, we'd like you to take a look at their F260 ultrasonic sensors. F260 series has a reliable 10-meter sensing range, even in dirty environments the F260 Series rugged ultrasonic sensors deliver 12-bit resolution over a 10-meter (33 ft) sensing window, providing both analog and dual switch point outputs. An ultra-powerful transducer permits installation in the dirtiest environments. These ultrasonic sensors are ideal for level control, overhead crane positioning, and many outdoor position feedback applications.
The F260 series ultrasonic level control sensors are also easy to configure – analog adjustments are quickly made in an intuitive software programming environment, while dual potentiometers control switch point adjustment. Beyond range limit control, the software effectively “smooths” outputs responding to unstable targets (i.e. turbulent tanks) by modifying sampling and filtering functions. F260 ultrasonic sensors also provide users with a 10-degree pivoting face, permitting optimum sensor-to-target alignment.

Have you ever wondered what DARK-ON and LIGHT-ON actually mean when it comes to photoelectric sensors?
For LIGHT-ON operation when the receiver 'sees' the light source it will indicate an active or detected indication. If the light source is blocked this sensor will be inactive.
For DARK-ON operation it's basically the opposite. The sensor will be inactive as long as it can see the emitting light source. If the light source is blocked this sensor will be active, thus the name DARK-ON (when the light is 'dark' the sensor is 'on').
Another way of saying it would be if you need an output when no light is received you need DARK-ON. If you need the output on while the receiver is receving light you would need LIGHT-ON.

For many of us in the industrial automation world, we often work with both inductive and capacitive proximity sensors.
Do you know what they do and what the difference between them is? If so, then feel free to move on to the next blog... if not, read on.
Inductive proximity sensors are designed to detect the presence or absence of metallic targets at relatively short distances, generally 60mm and below.
Capacitive proximity sensors, on the other hand, can detect both metallic and non-metallic targets. Their ability to sense through non-ferrous materials make them ideal for level sensing applications.
Capacitive sensors, like inductive proxes, also have a somewhat limited sensing range.
Marshall Wolf Automation has an extensive offering of inductive and capacitive proximity sensors. We are authorized industrial automation distributors for Altech, Autonics, Baumer, Carlo Gavazzi and Pepperl+Fuchs.

The Pepperl+Fuchs Bebco EPS purge and pressurization units were designed to supply protected enclosures with a clean instrument air or inert gas.
That explanation confused me a bit so I looked around a little more and found that basically this process removes flammable gases or prevents ignitable dust from accumulating within the protected enclosures.
These systems are commonly used for all applications involving basic electronics, electrical equipment, motors and switchgear.
BebcoEPS systems meet the demands of rack-mounted instrumentation, video displays, programmable controllers, computers, printers, recorders, measurement, gas analyzers and calibration equipment.
One of the best benefits is the continuous flow of protective gas, which can be specifically used to eliminate problems like heat increase, moisture buildup, dust and corrosion.

P+F is a great source for all types of
ultrasonic sensors, including ultrasonic motion sensors and ultrasonic
range sensors. Ultrasonic sensors present the ideal solution for non-contact position and distance measurement in all industrial areas where environmental conditions such as dust, smoke or steam may affect the sensors. Objects consisting of a variety of materials can be detected to within millimeters regardless of color or shape.
The ultrasonic sensor produces a data carrier utilizing very high frequencies that are outside the human’s audible range. The time it takes for that ultrasonic wave to pass between the sensor and the object is the value for the distance or the position. Ultrasonic sensors have proven their reliability and precision in many industries, including lumber and furniture, construction materials and equipment, farming equipment and in level control applications.
Pepperl+Fuchs’ ultrasonic sensors currently encompass twelve series of mechanical designs for through-beam, direct detection and retro-reflective operation. Customer and application specific custom solutions underscore our technological competence in this area of sensors.
Some product features are:
- Devices with TEACH-IN functionality for fast and simple installation
- ULTRA 3000 software for improved adaptation of sensors to applications
- Adjustable sensitivity to the sound beam width for optimized adjustment of the sensor characteristics according to the application
- Temperature compensation - compensates for sound velocity due to varying air temperatures
- Synchronization input to prevent cross-talk interference when sensors are mounted within close proximity of eachother
- Sensors with digital and/ or analog outputs
