Industrial Motor Enclosures Explained

Ever wonder what ODP, TE and DIP mean in relation to motors? Okay, I'm sure you have been kept up nights wondering... you can now rest easy, here is what they mean!

ODP= Open Drip Proof Motors

As it states, this is an open type of motor that limited size openings to prevent contact with moving or hazardous parts. Internal parts of ODP motors are protected from drop, splash and falling objects. Best used in a relatively clean environment.

TE= Totally Enclosed Motors

You guessed it - these type of motors are... enclosed! These type of motors can be used in dusty, dirty and humid environments because the inside of the motor is protected.

There are further choices here:

  • TENV - totally enclosed non-ventilated
  • TEFC - totally enclosed fan-cooled
  • TEBC- totally enclosed blower-cooled

DIP= Dust Ignition Proof Motors for Hazardous Locations

You would use this type of motor in flammable, dusty environments.

This type of industrial electric motor is suitable for operation in a Class II hazardous environment.

Lenze Servo Motors

Meeting stringent requirements in terms of response, precision and excellent power-to-size ratio, the motor sizes have been carefully graded and offer rated torques from 0.8 to 64 Nm (0.25 to 10.0 kW) and peak torques of up to 191 Nm. As a result, finding the optimum motor for any drive task is easy.

What are detent torques?

Detent torques (reluctance torques, cogging) superimpose themselves on the electromagnetic torque, taking the form of a disturbance variable. This makes it harder for sudden changes in torque to be absorbed, results in increased system deviations when changing setpoints and makes it more difficult to compensate for speed variations. A detent torque of just 3% of the rated motor torque, for example, will reduce the potential control loop gain by 14%. Detent torques are caused by a lack of compatibility between the rotor-mounted permanent magnets and the workings of the stator lamination. In the case of MCS servo motors, which feature single element pole technology, magnetic attraction is optimised thanks to the special pole design. These motors exhibit extremely low detent torques, thereby providing maximum control loop gain for a stable control response, even within the context of high-response applications.

  • – The shafts, which are made from high-strength steel
  • – The vibration-resistant and fully-encapsulated windings
  • – The robust connectors, which can rotate about 270°
  • – The corrosion-resistant (NdFeB) permanent magnets

Generously proportioned bearings with high-temperature-resistant permanent lubrication ensure operational reliability even with a worst case scenario shaft load. The smooth surfaces and high degree of protection (IP54, IP65) make for quick and easy cleaning when required.

Single Phase Motors; A Common Question

Single phase motors are not controlled by varying the frequency in the same manner of a VFD but are controlled by varying the voltage.

The basic design of the capacitor start motor is to maintain synchronous speed. These motors are built with a centrifugal switch on board.

When the speed of the motor drops below a fixed speed the switch will make contact and fire the capacitor to bring the motor back up to synchronous speed. If you vary the voltage to these motors, the capacitor will keep recharging and trying to get the motor to the synchronous speed until the capacitor fails and the motor itself fails.

The best way to get the variable speed you require would be to replace the motor with a three phase motor and a VFD. The VFD can run off single or three phase power and will give you a three phase output to control the motor speed. We have vendors that offer extended warranty (up to three years) with the purchase of a motor drive package.

Why Your Motors Will Last Longer With KB Controls

If you are using permanent magnet type industrial electric motors, read this!

During certain conditions, such as frequent starting or accidental jam ups, the magnets in these motors can become demagnetized. This is something that happens over time and results in a loss of speed and efficiency at rated torque.

This is so common that your motor manufacturer probably publishes a specification sheet indicating demagnetization current for their motors!

To eliminate this potential issue KB Electronics has designed and patented the fastest current limit circuit available! It is a high-speed, direct-fed™, anti demagnetization circuit. Your motor will not become demagnetized when using any of our KB Electronics Penta-Power products!

Delta Servo Motors

As the technology of microprocessor units become more advanced, the development and cost effectiveness of permanent magnet manufacturing technology for servo motor and high power and high performance semiconductor power devices is improved continuously. Therefore, AC servo motor and AC servo control systems have become the basic techniques for accomplishing automation control technology in the current industrial field.

Delta's servo system is an omnibearing integrated servo system which is based on Delta's strength in industrial and electronic technology and developed for different customers' requirements of various application machine tools. All of the ASDA series servo drives are provided with a superior digital signal processor (DSP) which represents a high-speed performance of the control circuit loop. Beside, the other features of the Delta ASDA series, including gain tuning, smooth motor operation and software analysis / monitor function it also provides high-speed and high-precision motion control for a wide range of industrial automation applications.

ECMA series servo motors are permanent AC servo motors, capable of combining with 200 to 230V ASDA-A2 220V series AC servo drives from 100W to 15kW and 380V to 480V ASDA-AS 400V series AC servo drives from 750W to 15kW.

For the 220V series, there are eight frame sizes available, and for the 400V series, there are three frame sizes available. The motor speed is from 1000 r/min(220V) or 1500 r/min(400V) to 5000 r/min and the torque output is from 1.92 N-m(220V) or 2.39 N-m(400V) to 224 N-m.

The ECMA series provides brake and oil seal to fully support customer needs. It also offers two different shaft selections, round shaft and keyway, for various applications.
