SSW-05 Soft Starter from WEG

WEG soft starters are fitted with micro processors. They are high-tech and were designed to ensure the highest performance during starts and stops of induction motors.  Soft-Starters are electronic starters designed to accelerate, deccelerate and protect three-phase induction motors, controlling the voltage applied on the motor.  The SSW-05 Plus Micro Soft-Starters, with DSP control (Digital Signal Processor) have been designed to supply an excellent performance during starting and stopping electric motors with excellent cost / benefit ratio.

The Operator Interface allows easy parameter setting, simply fying the start-up and operation activities.  The SSW-05 Plus Micro Soft-Starters are compact, optimizating the space in electrical panels and already incorporates all protections for the driven motor.  Some possible applications for this soft-start are: Bladed Vaccum Pumps, Centrifugal Pumps, Crusher (Unloaded Starts), Screw Compressors (Relief Start), Mixers, Cellulose Refiners, Axial Fans (Low Inercia and Low Load).  Great for replacing mechanical contactors!

Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the entire line of WEG soft starters, motors and AC drives!  We have technical help in-house to assist you with your application questions, all us today at 800-625-9653 (WOLF)

Weg Soft Starter Tech Question

Question:

I recently purchased an SE-05 soft start. It will not allow the motor to start when the overload is active. Is there an internal reset feature, other than the pin on the front, that I’m not aware of?

The unit did run for about 5 min on initial startup. Everything works fine with the overload feature disabled.

Answer:

The part is actually Weg soft starter number SSW050045T2246EPZ

If you go to parameter P206 you can reduce the time in between fault and auto reset but if the same fault happens 4 times you will be disabled and will need to reset. There is an external reset available by using the DI2 digital input. You can send a signal remotely to the soft start if this will help.

When any fault is detected, excepting E10, E24, E29, E31 and E67, the SSW-05 soft starter can cause an automatic reset after the time programmed at P206 has elapsed

If after an “auto-reset” the same fault is repeated three times consecutively, the Auto- Reset function will be disabled. A fault is considered consecutive if it happens again within 30 second after an auto-reset has been executed.

This is fault is repeated four times consecutively, it will be displayed permanently and the Soft-Starter will be disabled. Auto-Reset Enable/Disable is executed through the Dip Switch (Man Auto) or by means of P106 and P220.

Note: For motor overload and thyristor overload there is a specific algorithm for the automatic reset time.

Why Use Motor Soft Starters?

Motors are used every day in situations that you might not even be aware of. Take a look around and you might be surprised at how many things use motors to work.

A motor soft starter basically decreases the torque and workload during the startup of the motors. The reason to use a motor soft starter is to reduce mechanical stress which helps in extending the lifespan of your motor and equipment.

Soft starters offer you a simple and low cost way to control the fixed speed of your AC motors. Ideal for conveyors and material handling applications, pumps and fan systems.

If you are interested in finding out if your application would benefit from using soft starters just give us a call. Our in-house tech department is ready and waiting!

Applications That Benefit From Using Soft Starters

Soft starters can be used in a wide variety of applications, however, there are advantages for specific industries.

In pump applications soft starters are commonly used to avoid pressure surges. Material handling or conveyor belt systems can be smoothly started - no jerking or stress on drive components.

Other issues that occur when motors generate too much power on starting include belt slip on heater blowers or a sudden buildup of water pressure in washing installations.

A soft starter limits the inrush current which reduces the transient voltage drops that can affect other loads.

The bottom line is that a soft starter will start the motor in a slow, controlled manner. Any application that would benefit from this is ideal!

Soft Starters/Motor Controllers

Carlo Gavazzi offers a range of motor controllers for soft starting/stopping, dynamic braking, and reversing of three phase squirrel cage motors. Applications include conveyor systems, pumps, compressors, industrial dryers, mixers, automatic doors, palletizers, and fans.

Soft start controllers feature internal bypass relays which eliminate the need for large external heatsinks. This minimizes the space requirements in your panel and also greatly reduces the heat generated.

We also offer soft starters with built-in over temperature monitoring, thermal monitoring of motor via PTC sensor, and built-in overload protection (class 10 or class 20).

With the increasing use of geo-thermal energy and the rising cost of energy in HVAC systems in general, our range also includes single and three phase soft starters for scroll compressors in order to minimize the starting current and preventing light flickering.

Marshall Wolf Automation can offer your organization value added installations

Marshall Wolf Automation can offer your organization many value added services.  Just the other day I had a call and the prospect was looking to get a quote for a motor starter in an enclosure.  After some further qualifying questions it was determined that a Nema 4/12 enclosure would suffice, prospect wanted a control transformer, fusible disconnect, and a simple start stop buttons only.  No problem our shop can prepare an suitable sized enclosure, the disconnect, fusing, control transformer, push buttons, non-reversing starter with thermal overload mounted in the enclosure all prewired, ready to ship in days.  Here's a few photographs highlighting a very similar application.  Marshall Wolf Automation is an Industrial Automation Distributor and a Industrial Supply Distributor for:

Let's Compare: Variable Frequency Drives vs. Soft Starters

Let's start with the basic differences between a soft starter and a variable frequency drive.

When you use a soft starter the motor is started at a reduced voltage and once it has reached full speed the soft starter will then get to work.

If you use a variable frequency drive you can vary the speed of the motor by regulating the output frequency  from the VFD.

If you are just looking to start a motor and ramp it up to full speed a soft starter should do the job.

If you need to vary the speed you should take a look at a variable speed AC drive.

Already using a soft starter and wish you had used a variable frequency drive? Not a problem, you can replace a soft starter with a variable speed drive.

Marshall Wolf Automation can make the decision really easy. Not only do we offer free in-house tech support, we also are authorized distributors for all the top lines of both variable speed drives AND soft starters!

We can help recommend the best AC Tech Lenze, Fuji, Weg, Hitachi, Delta or TECO AC drive as well as soft starters from WEG, Carlo Gavazzi and TECO.

Weg Soft Starters 101

What do Weg soft starters do?

Basically they are static starters that accelerate, decelerate and protect three-phase induction motors.

Soft starters help start and stop an electric motor smoothly. The torque produced is adjusted to the needs of the load... this means the current is going to be the lowest possible for the starting procedure.

All Weg soft starters are micro processed, digital and designed for the best starting and stopping promotion!
