What Is The Difference Between A Transformer And A Power Supply?

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 by Beckie Bordenaro
Transformers are AC to AC devices... you cannot transform DC.  Transformers convert AC electricity from one voltage to another voltage, usually with little loss of power.

control power transormersThe input coil on a transformer is called the primary and the output coil on a transformer is called the secondary.

Industrial DC power supplies, on the other hand, reduce high voltage (generally AC) to a safer low DC voltage.

Do you need a transformer? We are authorized industrial automation distributors for the complete line of Micron transforms. You might also call these CPT's, control power transformers, step-up transformers or high inrush transformers.ac to dc power supply

After reading this maybe you have decided what you actually need is an industrial DC power supply to reduce AC voltage to a lower DC voltage?

Not a problem, we have a large inventory of VDC output power supplies ranging from 5 to 960 watt.

Micron Transformers & Industrial DC Power Supplies

Tuesday, August 30, 2011 by Beckie Bordenaro
If you are looking for a great source for both industrial transformers and AC to DC switching power supplies, think Micron Transformers!

micron transformerMicron Transformers and Power Supplies has been an industry leader for more than 40 years. Micron is the only major electrical manufacturer that focuses exclusively on industrial transformers and power supplies!

Micron developed the industry's first epoxy encapsulated machine tool transformer, receiving a patent for the ImperviTRAN control transformer. Although other transformer manufacturers have since copied its encapsulated design, Micron's ImperviTRAN remains the industry leader.

Have you seen Micron's warranty?  20 years on transformers and 5 years on power supplies!  This is the best I've seen.

Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the full line of Micron transformers and industrial DC power supplies.

Solid & Split Core Current Transformers

Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by Beckie Bordenaro
Carlo Gavazzi's CTD series is an easily installed, connectable with all types of wiring terminals and can be installed on DIN-rail or directly to the back panel.

split and solid core transformersYou have the possibility of bridging the secondary without changing the connections which avoids dangerous over-voltages.

Split core transformers simplify installation by not requiring disconnection of the wire or busbar connection.

Solid core transformers offer more precision and a more economical price.

Other features of the Carlo Gavazzi CTD series of solid and split core transformers include:
  • Solid and split core transformers in 12 frame sizes
  • Cable, horizontal and vertical busbar mounting types
  • Primary currents up to 2,000A AC
  • Secondary currents of 1A or 5A AC
  • Sealable terminal block covers
  • 2 to 10 bus-bar isolating fixing screws
  • DIN-rail mounting holder and removable panel fixing clips
  • Double screw terminals (up to 8 wiring connections)
  • UL recognized and CSA approved
Marshall Wolf Automation is your authorized industrial automation distributor for the complete line of Carlo Gavazzi products!

We carry a full line of all types of transformers including Simpson Electric, Micron Transformers and, of course, Carlo Gavazzi.

Micron Industries - More Than Just Transformers!

First, let's start with the basics. What is a transformer?
A transformer is a passive electrical device which is designed to change one voltage to another by magnetic induction.

What Is The Difference Between Linear and Switching Power Supplies?

Wednesday, June 2, 2010 by Beckie Bordenaro
A common question we receive here regarding our industrial DC power supplies is 'what is the difference between linear power supplies and AC to DC switching power supplies?'.

Switching power supplies and linear power supplies differ in how the primary AC voltage is converted into the output DC voltage.

Switching power supplies use a power transistor to produce a high frequency voltage that is delta power suppliespassed through a small transformer and then filtered to remove both the AC component and noise.

Linear power supplies deliver DC by passing the primary AC voltage through a transformer and then filtering it to remove the AC component.

Switching AC to DC power supplies  feature higher efficiencies, lighter weight, longer hold up times and the ability to handle wider input voltage ranges. Note: We carry AC to DC switching power supplies!

Linear power supplies can be less expensive however they are limited in capability and tend to be larger in size.

Marshall Wolf Automation is a large industrial automation distributor for all the top manufacturers of AC to DC switching power supplies! We are an authorized IDEC distributor as well as for Delta, Altech, Carlo Gavazzi and Micron power supplies.
