Tech Question Regarding AC Tech Lenze SMVector Drives

Question:

I took your advice and downloaded the operator's manual for the Lenze AC Tech SM vector drive and have read through it a couple of times.  I have a couple of concerns:

# 1- I have some worry about the admonition about starting the drive into a coasting motor.  In our application it should not be a big problem but there's always a chance that the operator could give a "stop" command, change his/her mind and immediately give a "run" command while the motor was still coasting down.

If I understand the manual, if we set the controller to stop with DC braking, the motor will not restart until it has come to a stop.  That is, a "run" command would be ignored until the motor had stopped.  Is that a correct interpretation?

#2 - Second, for the motor parameters required for torque limiting in vector torque mode, the stator resistance and stator inductance could be measured directly but the manual seems to suggest that those parameters would also be calculated by the controller during set-up, depending on how P399 is set.  Am I interpreting this correctly?

Answers:

#1 The drive will not start if the DC brake is active; but keep in mind, if the drive is set up for coast with a DC brake, the moment the drive sees a stop command the DC brake will engage.  So, the motor will have a DC voltage applied and will probably still be spinning, you can do that, but it’s not good for all applications.

#2 As far as the stator resistance and inductance go.  Those values are actually measured by the drive during the calibration for vector mode.  So typically after entering 306-306, set 399 to standard calibration and apply a start command.

Student Looking For A Variable Frequency Drive Recommendation

Question:

I am a Ph.D. student working in the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the University of British Columbia.

I have a blower with a 230/460 Volts AC, Three Phase (17.4/8.7 Amps), 7.5 hp motor.

I am looking for a variable frequency drive for this blower to change the motor speed and so blower flow rate.

Please provide me with your suggestions for appropriate VFD for described motor that suit my technical requirements.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Answer:

Take a look at the AC Tech SM Vector variable frequency drive. Below I have quoted both the 230 and 460 volt input versions as I did not know the input voltage and the motor can run off either.

ESV552N02TXB AC Tech 7.5 HP Nema 1 230 volt input $441.10 or ESV552N04TXB AC Tech 7.5 HP Nema 1 460 volt input $438.90

Lenze Servo Motors

Meeting stringent requirements in terms of response, precision and excellent power-to-size ratio, the motor sizes have been carefully graded and offer rated torques from 0.8 to 64 Nm (0.25 to 10.0 kW) and peak torques of up to 191 Nm. As a result, finding the optimum motor for any drive task is easy.

What are detent torques?

Detent torques (reluctance torques, cogging) superimpose themselves on the electromagnetic torque, taking the form of a disturbance variable. This makes it harder for sudden changes in torque to be absorbed, results in increased system deviations when changing setpoints and makes it more difficult to compensate for speed variations. A detent torque of just 3% of the rated motor torque, for example, will reduce the potential control loop gain by 14%. Detent torques are caused by a lack of compatibility between the rotor-mounted permanent magnets and the workings of the stator lamination. In the case of MCS servo motors, which feature single element pole technology, magnetic attraction is optimised thanks to the special pole design. These motors exhibit extremely low detent torques, thereby providing maximum control loop gain for a stable control response, even within the context of high-response applications.

  • – The shafts, which are made from high-strength steel
  • – The vibration-resistant and fully-encapsulated windings
  • – The robust connectors, which can rotate about 270°
  • – The corrosion-resistant (NdFeB) permanent magnets

Generously proportioned bearings with high-temperature-resistant permanent lubrication ensure operational reliability even with a worst case scenario shaft load. The smooth surfaces and high degree of protection (IP54, IP65) make for quick and easy cleaning when required.

AC Tech Lenze 8400 Inverters

A leading global manufacturer of electrical and mechanical drives, motion control and automation technology, AC Tech Lenze offers the 8400 Inverter Series. The 8400 series features L-Force automation technology for tailored motion control solutions that deliver stable and high dynamic performance in a range of material handling and logistics applications.

The 8400 product family runs the gamut from basic inverter to ‘servo’ inverter. From simple continuous motion applications, like driving a conveyor, to controlling complex synchronized pick-and-place applications, there is an 8400 inverter right-sized for the job.  Matched with high efficiency Lenze motors, gearboxes and brakes, the 8400 series steers the whole drive package.

Most mechanical processes have variable power requirements that depend on external parameters, such as the production volume. A frequency inverter matches the speed and torque with the process requirements. In addition to L-Force control and software, the 8400 series inverters incorporate intelligent features, including memory modules, online diagnostics and optional integrated safety systems.

Lenze AC Tech and Packaging: Foil Pouch Filling Machine

Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor, is your source for Lenze AC Tech products.

Following is an application featured on the Lenze AC Tech website.  The customer is Multi-Pak annd the application concerns foil pouch filling machines.  Products used are PositionServo, MCS Motors, G-Motion Gearboxes, and SM Vector.

Smooth Packaging with Servo and AC Drives Solution

Multi-Pak is renowned for designing, engineering, developing and supporting its own packaging machines. These particular machines are typically used for cosmetic samples. Having developed robust and reliable foil pouch filling machines using mechanical web tensioning and liquid filling processes, the electronically controlled alternative solution from Lenze-AC Tech had to show significant benefits.

The Lenze-AC Tech solution uses PositionServo drives as master and slave to provide web tension, PositionServo drives with Lenze servo gearboxes and MCS motors for pump control, and SMVectors running the main unwinding reel. The PositionServos control the rollers that “draw” the material into the area where the bottom is heat sealed, then the liquid is pumped into it and the material indexes down to the next area where the sides and top are heat sealed.

The SMVector controls the main shaft, which also functions as the timing for the sealing dies. Both processes use mechanical cams and/or stepper motors to achieve the moves. Changing products or moves is very time consuming for each set up. Multi-Pak saw a significant increase in machine speed and a significant reduction in set up time by running many different products sequentially.

Multi-Pak liked the flexibility of adjusting the move distance easily for different products. Multi-Pak employs a Maple touchscreen with serial comms connected to the servo to adjust for different lengths of packages. Multi-pak also uses a simple operator station with selector switches to adjust the index degrees.
