As you know we are your KEB America/KEB distributor for a wide range of products, including brakes and clutches.
In this blog I am going to summarize information I found when looking up how to select brakes and clutches.
Let's start with what they are used for.
You can probably guess that a brake is used to stop a load. Clutches, on the other hand, are basically used to transfer torque. You can buy just a brake, just a clutch or a combination clutch and brake.
Just a clutch would be used when you are going to be adjusting the load and motor while leaving the motor to run all the time. The motor could coast to a stop using just a clutch.
A brake is ideal when accurate stopping is needed, the motor will stop as well.
You would need a combination brake and clutch when the load will be started and stopped while the motor continues to rotate.
Other things that will need to be specified include:
- Mounting
- Motor horsepower and frame size
- Coil voltage
Once you have all of this information we can easily help you choose the best brake and/or clutch for your application!
