Pepperl Fuchs KC Series

Featuring 3-port isolation, 12.5 mm SIL-rated KC Series from Pepperl+Fuchs can be programmed and configured in field with pushbutton or dip switch logic functions. Units provide limit detection with form C alarm contacts, as well as fault detection and alarm functionality. With spring terminals, cable is inserted in socket and fixed by spring force, and can be released by pressing terminal button. Devices are suited for control rooms with limited space in both hazardous areas and general purpose locations.

These intrinsic safety barriers connect easily with our exclusive PowerRail system. By using PowerRail, a group of safety barriers is energized from an AC or DC source & monitored for group fault conditions. The PowerRail & IS barrier combination allows for simple expansion with no additional wires. You can also design multiple redundant power configurations.

KB Electronics Now Available From Yours Truly

Marshall Wolf Automation can now offer you the popular KB Electronics line of AC and DC speed controls.

First up is the KBMM series, an adjustable speed DC drive available from 1/100  to 3/4 hp (1.5hp with with auxiliary heatsink). This series can control motors by inserting the proper Plug-in Horsepower Resistor®.

Features of the KB Electronics KBMM series include:

  • Auto Inhibit®

  • MOV transient protection

What do zener barriers offer you? A cost saving protection solution in hazardous locations. The amount of energy transferred to the hazardous location is limited to a safe level incapable of igniting the explosive atmosphere.

Thermocouples and Galvanically Isolated Intrinsic Safety Barriers

Pepperl+Fuchs has a wide variety of galvanically isolated intrinsic safety barriers that will work with thermocouples.

When in a hazardous location and working on selecting a barrier, the first question that needs to be answered is, “What type of signal(s) are you looking for on the control side of the barrier?” Once that question is answered, you can begin the process of selecting a barrier.

All of the K-System barriers have removable terminal blocks. As a separate accessory, there is a terminal block that has built-in cold junction compensation for use specifically with thermocouples, the K-CJC-BU. This terminal block has an integrated encapsulated Pt100 RTD that is used for cold junction compensation, eliminating the need to maintain a known reference temperature.

Intrinsically Safe Barriers 101

Intrinsically safe systems have energy levels that are so low that they cannot cause an explosion.

How do you achieve this? You can use zener diode barriers or isolated barriers to limit energy to a hazardous or potentially flammable area.

What are the difference between zener diode barriers and isolated barriers?

Zener diode barriers provide a simple method for implementing intrinsic safety. They must be connected to a dedicated intrinsic safety earth ground - which can be a problem for certain applications.

If you do not have a proper ground system in place the cost to install and maintain one maybe outweigh the savings of this inexpensive solution.

Isolated barriers do not require a dedicated ground and provide a galvanic isolation for anything connected to them. These do usually require a separate power supply. 

Intrinsic safety is the safest, least expensive and easiest to install method of hazardous area protection available!

Explosion Proof Sensor Solutions from Leuze-Part 1

Leuze Electronics-the sensor people-has a variety of sensors available to be used in explosive atmospheres.

Following are some examples of explosion proof sensor solutions from Leuze:

46B Ex  n Series-The sensors of the 46B series comply with category 3 and have been developed especially for zone 2 ("Gas-Ex") in protection type nA and for zone 22 ("Dust-Ex") in protection type td.  They may be used with conducting and non-conducting dust. The sensors are accommodated inside a metal casing for protection against mechanical damage.

 

Intrinsically safe sensors of the 92 Ex series-These are designed either as a single-beam light barrier, as a reflection light barrier or as a reflection light button, and can detect objects reliably at distances between 300mm and 12 m.  The intrinsically safe ATEX sensors communicate the switching signals by way of the NAMUR interface to the VS 403 isolating switching amplifiers.  Sensors of this series may be used in zones 1 and 2 in areas where there are potentially explosive gases and dust.

 

Isolated switching amplifier VS 403 with intrinsically safe supply circuit-The VS 403 isolating switching amplifier makes it possible to effect an intrinsically safe circuit for the sensors of the '92" series.  For setting up the intrinsically safe circuit, Leuze electronics also offers blue cables with M12 circular plugs to connect the sensor to the isolating switching amplifier.
