Why Variable Frequency Drives Continue To Grow In Popularity

Energy is a buzzword that isn't going away anytime soon.

'Energy savings' is a topic that involves lower costs, longer equipment life, less maintenance, reinforcing 'green' concepts and much more.

Variable frequency drives are an easy way to reduce energy costs in induction motor systems. We are seeing pumps and fans as a big market but most industrial applications can also take advantage of these savings.

One of our high performance AC drive lines, Fuji Electric, is another key reason why VFD's continue to grow more efficient and reliable. Why? They are constantly improving the power electronics the drives depend on. Fuji Electric is a main manufacturer and supplier of IGBT's (insulated gate bipolar transistor). New technologies with IGBT's have allowed VFD's to become more compact.

We are finding that many of our general purpose AC drives are now being offered with higher performance features. Our Fuji FRENIC-MEGA and our AC Tech SMVector are two that come to mind that offer customers more than just general purpose features... while staying in the same price range of those drives.

Marshall Wolf Automation has a complete offering of variable frequency drives. We have the top brands, great pricing and in-house technical support. Let us help you find out what adding or upgrading a variable speed drive can do for your application!

Industrial Motor Enclosures Explained

Ever wonder what ODP, TE and DIP mean in relation to motors? Okay, I'm sure you have been kept up nights wondering... you can now rest easy, here is what they mean!

ODP= Open Drip Proof Motors

As it states, this is an open type of motor that limited size openings to prevent contact with moving or hazardous parts. Internal parts of ODP motors are protected from drop, splash and falling objects. Best used in a relatively clean environment.

TE= Totally Enclosed Motors

You guessed it - these type of motors are... enclosed! These type of motors can be used in dusty, dirty and humid environments because the inside of the motor is protected.

There are further choices here:

  • TENV - totally enclosed non-ventilated
  • TEFC - totally enclosed fan-cooled
  • TEBC- totally enclosed blower-cooled

DIP= Dust Ignition Proof Motors for Hazardous Locations

You would use this type of motor in flammable, dusty environments.

This type of industrial electric motor is suitable for operation in a Class II hazardous environment.

Chint NS2 Series Manual Motor Starter - a cost effective motor control solution

Chint, a global manufacturer of electrical components, has an extremely low cost, basic type starter for the market and is very involved on the OEM specified equipment side, Their value, at their price points, is unmatched.  Here is a list of basic features:

Low Cost AC Manual Motor Starter/Protector
Chint NS2 Series

  • Manufactured by Chint
  • Available up to 80 Amp
  • Rated voltages: 230/240, 00/415, 440, 500, 690
  • IP20 Rated
  • Temperature rating: -5°C to +40°C
  • UL Listed (C-UL - CE and UL Listed)
  • Certificates/Approvals: CB, ESC, PCT, SEMKO, UKRTEST
  • Electrical Ratings: AC690V, 25A, 80A
  • Standards: IEC60947-2, IEC60947-4-1

A starter is usually an assembly, that includes a contactor plus an overload relay, used to start an electic motor.  A major difference between contactor/overloads are rated by their current in amps while starters are rated by their horsepower capacity and the current they use.  In essence, a manual motor starter is basically an ON-OFF switch with overload protection and operates from a toggle handle or push button that is operated by hand.

Do I Need NEMA 4 For This Application?

Question:

Hello, I have a Baldor M3211T motor. It's 3hp, 3 phase ,1725 rpms. I'm looking to put a variable frequency drive on this motor to control the speed of one of my 2" x 72" belt grinders used in my knife making business.

It would need to mount on the grinder frame so it will get quite exposed to grinding dust but not water. Not sure if Nema 4 is absolutely required for this or not.

Also, I would like a potentiometer knob on the drive. Looking to keep it as economical as possible.

Answer:

I cannot find the M3211T on the Baldor site so this may be an older motor. The closest I find is the following:

EM3211T  Baldor 3HP,1760RPM,3PH,60HZ,182T,3630M,OPSB,F1

The fine grinds seem to find themselves into just about anything. I would suggest going to  a Nema 4 variable frequency drive to help protect the drive from your environment. That being said, Nema 4 drives are sealed up and do not offer potentiometers on the face for this reason. Potentiometers are difficult to seal up.

I need to know what your input voltage/phase you have available to power the drive and I need you to verify this is a 3 hp 230 volt three phase input motor and I can give you a few options.

Do you need help on your application? Send it over and we'll get right back to you. Marshall Wolf Automation has a complete offering of high performance AC drives, industrial electric motors and all the automation components you need!

Why Your Motors Will Last Longer With KB Controls

If you are using permanent magnet type industrial electric motors, read this!

During certain conditions, such as frequent starting or accidental jam ups, the magnets in these motors can become demagnetized. This is something that happens over time and results in a loss of speed and efficiency at rated torque.

This is so common that your motor manufacturer probably publishes a specification sheet indicating demagnetization current for their motors!

To eliminate this potential issue KB Electronics has designed and patented the fastest current limit circuit available! It is a high-speed, direct-fed™, anti demagnetization circuit. Your motor will not become demagnetized when using any of our KB Electronics Penta-Power products!

SSW-05 Soft Starter from WEG

WEG soft starters are fitted with micro processors. They are high-tech and were designed to ensure the highest performance during starts and stops of induction motors.  Soft-Starters are electronic starters designed to accelerate, deccelerate and protect three-phase induction motors, controlling the voltage applied on the motor.  The SSW-05 Plus Micro Soft-Starters, with DSP control (Digital Signal Processor) have been designed to supply an excellent performance during starting and stopping electric motors with excellent cost / benefit ratio.

The Operator Interface allows easy parameter setting, simply fying the start-up and operation activities.  The SSW-05 Plus Micro Soft-Starters are compact, optimizating the space in electrical panels and already incorporates all protections for the driven motor.  Some possible applications for this soft-start are: Bladed Vaccum Pumps, Centrifugal Pumps, Crusher (Unloaded Starts), Screw Compressors (Relief Start), Mixers, Cellulose Refiners, Axial Fans (Low Inercia and Low Load).  Great for replacing mechanical contactors!

Weg Soft Starter Tech Question

Question:

I recently purchased an SE-05 soft start. It will not allow the motor to start when the overload is active. Is there an internal reset feature, other than the pin on the front, that I’m not aware of?

The unit did run for about 5 min on initial startup. Everything works fine with the overload feature disabled.

Answer:

The part is actually Weg soft starter number SSW050045T2246EPZ

If you go to parameter P206 you can reduce the time in between fault and auto reset but if the same fault happens 4 times you will be disabled and will need to reset. There is an external reset available by using the DI2 digital input. You can send a signal remotely to the soft start if this will help.

When any fault is detected, excepting E10, E24, E29, E31 and E67, the SSW-05 soft starter can cause an automatic reset after the time programmed at P206 has elapsed

If after an “auto-reset” the same fault is repeated three times consecutively, the Auto- Reset function will be disabled. A fault is considered consecutive if it happens again within 30 second after an auto-reset has been executed.

This is fault is repeated four times consecutively, it will be displayed permanently and the Soft-Starter will be disabled. Auto-Reset Enable/Disable is executed through the Dip Switch (Man Auto) or by means of P106 and P220.

Note: For motor overload and thyristor overload there is a specific algorithm for the automatic reset time.
