Baumer's HS35 is an incremental hollow shaft encoder that gives you heavy duty durability plus the accuracy of high-resolution optical encoders.

A quick check to a trusted resource (okay, Wikipedia) gave me this explanation:

A rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft or axle to an analog or digital code.

I don't know about you but this didn't quite clear it up for me. So I kept digging. Here is my combination of multiple descriptions I came across.

A rotary encoder is a sensor that gives an electrical signal in response to a rotational movement. This electrical signal then controls the speed or position of a mechanical device.

If you need close control of position or speed then a shaft encoder is probably something to look into.

A little deeper digging revealed the two main types of rotary encoders which are the incremental shaft encoders and the absolute encoder.

An incremental shaft encoder generates a series of pulses as it rotates. This leads to the output which is measured in pulses per revolution (also called ppr). These pulses are then used to measure speed or track position.

An absolute encoder is used to directly indicate actual position using an output signal of digital bits. This one is best left to the tech department.
