Lenze AC Tech and Automotive Application: Gear Testing Machine

Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor, is your source for Lenze AC Tech products.

Following is an application featured on the Lenze AC Tech website.  The customer was an engine starter gear manufacturer and the application was a gear testing machine.  The product used was a PositionServo Drive.

Twin PositionServos Gear Up Engine Starters

A manufacturer of gears for automotive engine starters recently incorporated two Lenze-AC Tech PositionServo drives into it’s test process. Test engineers chose the PositionServo for two distinct features: its integrated motion control for direct connection to an upline PLC and its intuitive interface for easy operator control. Two seemingly dissimilar features of a servo drive but a true benefit of the PositionServo  drive.

The two PositionServo drives provide precise motion and torque control required on the threaded spindles, an integral part of the machine that tests the gears of the automotive engine starters. The two drives start simultaneously yet run independently, rotating the spindles to a set revolution limit while also monitoring the torque on the spindles. If the torque reaches a preset maximum value set by the EPH-H315 HMI, then the operator receives a fault message indicating sub-par threads.

The main system PLC is informed of the test failure in addition to the HMI. After acknowledgement by the PLC, both PositionServo drives revert to unscrewing mode and return the spindles to home position. The test cycle is fully automatic, however with the inclusion of the HMI, the operator is able to cycle each drive in manual mode if the need arises. Additionally, the fault diagnostics and status functions of each PositionServo are displayed on the HMI in real-time.

Lenze AC Tech and Packaging: Foil Pouch Filling Machine

Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor, is your source for Lenze AC Tech products.

Following is an application featured on the Lenze AC Tech website.  The customer is Multi-Pak annd the application concerns foil pouch filling machines.  Products used are PositionServo, MCS Motors, G-Motion Gearboxes, and SM Vector.

Smooth Packaging with Servo and AC Drives Solution

Multi-Pak is renowned for designing, engineering, developing and supporting its own packaging machines. These particular machines are typically used for cosmetic samples. Having developed robust and reliable foil pouch filling machines using mechanical web tensioning and liquid filling processes, the electronically controlled alternative solution from Lenze-AC Tech had to show significant benefits.

The Lenze-AC Tech solution uses PositionServo drives as master and slave to provide web tension, PositionServo drives with Lenze servo gearboxes and MCS motors for pump control, and SMVectors running the main unwinding reel. The PositionServos control the rollers that “draw” the material into the area where the bottom is heat sealed, then the liquid is pumped into it and the material indexes down to the next area where the sides and top are heat sealed.

The SMVector controls the main shaft, which also functions as the timing for the sealing dies. Both processes use mechanical cams and/or stepper motors to achieve the moves. Changing products or moves is very time consuming for each set up. Multi-Pak saw a significant increase in machine speed and a significant reduction in set up time by running many different products sequentially.

Multi-Pak liked the flexibility of adjusting the move distance easily for different products. Multi-Pak employs a Maple touchscreen with serial comms connected to the servo to adjust for different lengths of packages. Multi-pak also uses a simple operator station with selector switches to adjust the index degrees.

Lenze AC Tech and Sports: A Baseball Pitching Application

Lenze AC Tech products are available from Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor.  Here is another Lenze AC Tech application story featuring baseball.

SCF Drives Home Perfect Pitches

Based in Milford, Connecticut, ProBatter Sports engineers and markets state-of-the-art baseball training systems including the ProBatter ® Professional baseball simulator, the standard in high tech pitching machines. The system combines a computer-controlled baseball-pitching machine with cutting edge video technology, allowing a batter to practice under gamelike conditions.

Real baseballs are “thrown” by full size right-handed and/or left–handed pitchers who appear on a screen in front of you. Fastballs, curves, sliders, sinkers, cutters, change-ups, and slurves, are all thrown on an interchangeable basis, to multiple locations, at speeds up to 100 miles an hour with pinpoint accuracy. Plus there is full synchronization between the pitcher images and the computer-controlled pitching machine.

According to Michael Suba, VP of Engineering at ProBatter Sports, LLC, one of the crucial differences between the ProBatter ® simulator and conventional pitching machines is the fact that the ProBatter ® system uses a three-wheel machine, instead of the typical two-wheel.

“At first glance, the system's video component seems most impressive but it’s not what makes the ProBatter ® simulator such an outstanding training tool,” explains Suba. “The biggest difference is the fact that our three wheel machine can pretty much throw any pitch that a human being can throw.”

Finding the right motor inverter was crucial in order to achieve control of the wheels, speeding up or slowing down each axis in different combinations to simulate fastballs, sliders, curves or knuckle balls. That precise accel/decel capability is the secret behind a well simulated pitch and the reason why ProBatter Sports engineers chose the SCF Series Inverter drive.

The SCF inverter drive, complete with its dynamic braking, is able to decelerate the machine wheels faster and with more repeatability. Add to these benefits the drive’s physical size, its cost-effectiveness and availability, and the fact that Lenze - AC Tech offers worldwide support, makes the SCF drive a perfect fit.

Lenze AC Tech and the Food Industry: Ultrasonic Slicing Application

Your source for Lenze AC Tech products is Marshall Wolf Automation, your full-line industrial automation distributor.  Here is another application story from Lenze AC Tech involving the food industry.

Lenze AC Tech Positionservo 940 and SMD Cut the Price of Sausage Slicing

Lenze - AC Tech has worked closely with a specialist ultrasonic engineering company to solve the problem of making the perfect sliced sausage quickly and with minimal waste. A traditional cured continental sausage is difficult to cut very finely in an automated process because of the adhesive qualities of the meat, when a slice is made with a normal blade it tends to stick to the blade surface after the cut is complete.

The ultrasonic company, more used to sieving and sorting fine powders than chopping sausages, has applied its high frequency vibration technology to ensure the slices drop away from the blade neatly into the correct place each time.

The challenge was to integrate this high-end technology into a slicing machine and still meet the low-cost demands of the food processing industry. The solution was simple, using a 4 amp PositionServo 940 with encoder feedback, to control the position of the blade; the knife could be reciprocated in minimal time and with maximum speed and accuracy.

Driving through a precise Lenze MCS servo motor and gearbox combination and a cogged belt drive, the thickness of the slices can be controlled along the entire length of the sausage. The PositionServo is controlled via a  Lenze drive PLC unit and an HMI, in this case a 4” Lenze LCD grey scale touchscreen display.

By using an SMD drive to power the conventional AC motor that actuates the blade, the machine can be operated with domestic 110 – 240 V supply and still supply a super cost effective combination. Using CANopen to link all the machine control components also allowed minimal wiring to be used and resulted in a highly compact machine that is easy to program and very easy to use.

Natural Chilling-An Application Story on the Lenze-AC Tech MC Series Drive

Marshall Wolf Automation, your industrial automation distributor, is an authorized Lenze AC Tech distributor.  One of many applications utilizing Lenze Ac Techs MC series drives is illustrated below.

Did you know Lake Ontario cools downtown Toronto?  Icy water (4ºC/39ºF) taken from the bottom of Lake Ontario is sent to the Toronto Island Water Filtration Plant to be purified and then forwarded to a heat transfer station.

The treated water is utilized to lower the temperature of water used for air conditioning in downtown buildings and afterwards it flows into the city’s drinking water pipes. The project, initiated by Enwave District Energy Ltd., presently cools over 20 buildings in downtown Toronto. The Lake Ontario project begins with three high-density polyethylene pipes, 5 kilometers (3.10 miles) long, that reach 83 meters (272 feet) down to the bottom of Lake Ontario to draw the icy water and send it to purification systems at the Toronto Island Water Filtration Plant.

Here the water is screened, pre-chlorinated, filtered, disinfected, fluoridated and post-chlorinated. It continues with the pumps at the heat exchange station, the butterfly valves that control the flow and volume of the water, and the MC Series variable frequency drives that operate those valves.

It is estimated that the project will save 59 megawatts of capacity to the province of Ontario, which can be translated into the electricity needed to power the air conditioning systems in 12,000 homes. It has also been estimated that air pollution reduction from the system will be the equivalent of taking 4,000 to 8,000 cars a year off the road. Now that's cool.

Some benefits of the MC Series drive are:

  • Automatic Transfer to Bypass Option
  • PID Setpoint Control
  • Program Controller as Direct or Reverse-Acting
  • Keypad Option for Local & Remote Operation
  • NEMA 1, 12,4, 4X Enclosures Available
  • Proven Performance & Reliability
