Data Acquisition Systems from Novus Automation

Here is a basic overview of a few of the popular data acquisition systems(DAS or DAQ) we offer from Novus Automation.

Let's start with my trusted resource Wikipedia's definition for data acquisition:

Data acquisition is the process of sampling signals that measure real world physical conditions and converting the resulting samples into digital numeric values that can be manipulated by a computer. Data acquisition systems (abbreviated with the acronym DAS or DAQ) typically convert analog waveforms into digital values for processing.

The FieldLogger from Novus Automation handles analog (mV, TC, Volts, etc) as well as digital input signals. Powerful mathematical functions and high resolution and speed make it the ideal data logging solution.  It features high performance along with high connectivity and easy of configuration and operation.

Local inputs include 8 software configurable analog inputs for thermocouples, Pt100, Pt1000, voltage and current signals. Two relay outputs and 8 digital ports are included. Digital ports are individually configurable as inputs or outputs. Up to 64 channels of remote inputs are available. Networking capability provides total system capacity of over 2000 channels.

Up to 128 mathematical channels can be used to perform operations on the measured values. Up to 32 alarm events can be detected, allowing output activations, e-mails and SNMP traps for e-mail notification. Networking greatly expands available alarm and calculation capability.

The RS485 interface can operate as a Modbus RTU master or slave. As a master, it can read and log up to 64 remote channels. It’s 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface allows access through a browser (HTTP), FTP (client and server), e-mails (sending SMTP, SNMP) and Modbus TCP.

The unit has one USB interface to be connected to a computer (for configuration, monitoring and data download) and another USB port for plug-in flash driver for data retrieval. The 512k logging basic memory is used to store data and it can be greatly expanded to over 13 GB with an SD card.

An exclusive color HMI (human-machine interface) can be attached locally or remotely installed for indication or configuration. Our FREE user friendly configuration and monitoring software can be accessed by Ethernet, USB or RS485 and also provides on-line monitoring, data logging, plus downloading and exporting to spread sheets.

FieldLogger Questions & Answers

Here is a question and answer email that went on between myself and a recent customer regarding our Novus Automation FieldLogger:

I found your product (FieldLogger 8812 Series) very promising for a pressure measure that we have to save every 10msec.

Since we have to track some pipeline hydraulics we need to save two pressure measurement points that are some miles apart. For that tracking we should be able to save the pressure and the timestamp as well. So the questions:

1.            Sampling at 100Hz, how long the 13GB SD would last? –using just one analog input. You can do the math considering 4 bytes per channel per log. So: 4 bytes x 100 Hz = 400 bytes/sec. 13000000000 / 400 = 32500000 seconds = 541666 minutes = 9027 hours = 376 days.

2.            Can your data logger get the time from an external GPS equipment?, if not, is there any way of synch two data loggers that are some miles apart? Not directly! What you could do , if your GPS has any digital output, is to connect this output to a FieldLogger digital input and log this input as well. If you set this output to activate every 30 minutes (example) you can synchronize FieldLogger time when analyzing the data after download (you would see the exact time – 10 ms tolerance – when the GPS output was activated and would be able to compare it to the logged time-stamp).

Regarding the data storage:

1.            I assume analog value is saved as floating point (4 bytes). Is that correct? Yes!

2.            What’s the timestamp format? It is proprietary format. We use 8 bytes for that.

3.            Do you save the timestamp for every sample or just save it periodically? –in your estimation of the memory usage you don’t make references to the timestamp It depends on the logging rate. For logging intervals under 30 seconds we save it every now and then. For intervals above it, we save it for every log.

4.            Regarding the long term storage (13GB), does the software provide continuous saving or because of the open/closing files some gaps in the data could be expected? It is supposed to be continuous, regarding any problem with the SD card.

I like your approach for data synch keeping track of a sort of GPS-based heartbeat. Do you have any experience doing such integration?, could you recommend a provider for that solution?

I had suggested it a couple of times before, but I don’t know if it was actually done.
