Altech® introduces a new version of its UL508 manual motor controllers. This new miniature circuit breaker incorporates a reinforced housing for improved durability, offers both box and ring tongue terminals as standard, and includes a clear cover for easily tagging the circuit. This latest version maintains the UL listing using the same internals and materials.

Let's start by finding out exactly what a disconnect is and what it does.

Disconnect switches interrupt power to an electrical circuit. Basically they 'disconnect' the circuit.

Generally disconnect switches are used as a safety device to interrupt a circuit so that maintenance can work on equipment.

Additional applications for disconnect switches are managing a distribution network, shifting loads across the network, interrupting power while maintenance occurs or to turn off an area of the network if there is a safety threat.

You may have heard about lockout tagout systems which are commonly used with disconnect switches. Lockout tagouts are used to lock the switch so that it cannot accidently be turned back on and tagged so that people know who locked the switch, when and why.

Most disconnect systems are designed to be manually operated. There are options available, including keys, to make sure the user really wants to activate the switch.

Basically a voltage surge is any voltage level that is short in duration and is also 10% greater than the systems normal operating AC, RMS or DC voltage level. 

A voltage surge may also be called a voltage transient.

• A swell which is an increase in the power frequency AC voltage that lasts from 1/2 a cycle to a few seconds
• A sag, which is an rms reduction in the power frequency AC voltage that lasts from 1/2 cycle to a few seconds. A sag is also known as a dip
