Carlo Gavazzi offers new 3-phase switching solid state relays

Carlo Gavazzi is proud to announce their new RGC2 and RGC3 series of 3-phase switching solid state relays and contactors. They are an addition to the existing RGC1 single phase series of solid state relays and contactors, providing an innovative solution for 2 and 3-pole switching of 3-phase loads.

The product is intended to replace electromechanical contactors when switching speeds are quite frequent. Their compact size, easy installation and flexible configuration make these devices the ideal solution, especially when retrofitting. The RGC Series of solid state relays and contactors are designed for switching resistive as well as inductive loads and are UL Listed as Motor Controllers. Reliable operation is ensured by means of the integrated overvoltage protection, high I2t ratings and immunity conformance to industrial standards. Additionally, an innovative thermal design improves the product lifetime.

RGC2 and RGC3 Series devices are available in two frame sizes: 54mm or 70mm wide. RGC2, the 2-pole switching device, offers three current ratings of 25, 40 and 75AAC per pole at 40°C. While RGC3, the 3-pole switching device, offers five current ratings ranging 20 to 65Amps per pole. Optional monitoring feature offers possibility of detecting status of mains and load, as well as internal RGC failures: open or short circuit and overheating. Alarming is implemented with LED indication, electromechanical relay output and auxiliary transistor output.

Carlo Gavazzi True Delay On Release Timer

Carlo Gavazzi offers a comprehensive range of timers for mounting in the back of or for mounting on the front of panels. They offer a number of different housing types with either a SPDT or DPDT relay output. Covering most timing functions (On Delay, Interval, Off Delay, One Shot, Zero Speed, Star-Delta, and Recycler), their timers are suited for practically every application. Timers are frequently used in motor control centres, packaging machinery, HVAC equipment, control panels, and process control.

When you have only enough power to trigger the timer, try the DBB51 Series!  This timer is great for fan and light applications, hotel rooms and wind applications.  Thanks to their supercapacitor or rechargeable battery they continue to count time even without the power supply and switch the output relay at the end of this time.

Marshall Wolf Automation is proud to be an authorized industrial automation distributor of the full range of Carlo Gavazzi products.  Their range of counters includes both 6 and 8 digit types with counting inputs up to 10 KHz. Input signals can be contact/NPN, PNP, or AC voltage. Furthermore, their 1/16 DIN counter has a programmable relay output. In addition to their digital counters, they also offer 8 digit digital hour meters.

Multifunction Analog Timer from Carlo Gavazzi

The DMB51/71 Series multifunction Analog Timer has 7 knob-selectable function and 7 knob-selectable time ranges within 0.1s and 100h, DIN rail mountable. 17.5mm wide housing suitable for both back and front panel mounting.  DIN rail mountable - up to 100 hour time setting.

Application Using Autonics SRH1 Solid State Relays

I love images that show our products in an application. The one below is from an application that is manufacturing car bumpers and needs to monitor the molding temperature.

The solid state relay shown below is the new Autonics SRH1 series that offers an integrated heat sink. Marshall Wolf Automation offers a full line of solid state relays from Carlo Gavazzi, IDEC and Autonics. We also offer a complete line of temperature control products.

Compact Industrial Solid State Relays

The RX ThyReX is an extremely compact industrial SSR that is fully pluggable to make installation and servicing easy. This zero switching relay can be used for resistive and inductive loads. The position of the M4 mounting holes makes this solution interchangeable with standard hockey-puck relays. The control plug can have either screw or spring terminals. The power connection can be a screw type plug, a spring type plug or an open two-spade FASTON solution that comes with safety covers (no plugs). Both screw and spring type power plugs have a specially designed security leaver to lock/unlock. To facilitate assembly, the RX ThyReX can be ordered with its own thermal pad (optional).

Panel building can be a time-intensive operation as each SSR needs to be individually mounted and wired. The ThyRex Series is an innovative fast-connect SSR from Carlo Gavazzi.  To read more about solid state relays, check out this blog post from one of my co-workers!

Mounting and wiring are done simultaneously, thus speeding up the installation process.   For more solid state relays, check out our selection here: SSRs  Marshall Wolf Automation can help with your technical questions as well and we are now open early and stay open later to meet the needs of our east and west coast customers.  Contact us at 800-325-9653 (WOLF) from 7:30 am to 6:pm CST or email us at sales@wolfautomation.com

Which Solid State Relay Should I Use?

I recently had a customer needing 3-phase solid state relays and asking for assistance in finding out which one he should buy.

He told me each three phase relay would be driving a bank of three single phase heaters that were wired in a delta configuration. The load voltage would be 240VAC and each single phase heater consumes 1250 watts. He wanted zero crossing turn-on and the control voltage was 24VDC.

I recommended the RJ3A22D20 Carlo Gavazzi 3x20A 3-Pole switching Relay with built-in heat sink $130.40. Due to a bit of a delivery on that model I also offered a secondary option; RZ3A40D25 with RHS301 heatsink good for 10 amps up to 70°C (158°F) inside cabinet.

(Note from Beckie: Where else do you go that they not only check delivery but also include a secondary option just in case that delivery is too long?!)

I am available in our technical support department to help you with your applications as well!

Switching Principles of Solid State Relays; Ever Wonder What Zero Crossing Means?

Zero Switching, Instant-On Switching, Peak Switching, DC Switching, Analog Switching.... What does it all mean?

Let's start with the basics; a solid state relay (SSR) is an electronic switching device where a small control signal controls a larger load current or voltage. Solid state relays can be designed to switch either AC or DC to the load and has no moving parts. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

  • Zero switching is for resistive, inductive and capacitive loads. The SSR's output is activated at the first zero crossing of the line voltage.
  • Instant-on switching is for inductive loads. The SSR output is activated immediately after applying control voltage. Makes sense, 'instant-on'!
  • Peak switching is for heavy inductive loads. This SSR has the output activated at the first peak of the line voltage upon application of the control voltage.
  • DC switching is for resistive and inductive loads. Generally used for the control of DC motors and valves this type operates in accordance with the control input.
  • Analog switching solid state relays are for resistive loads. The output operates in accordance with the phase control principle.

Of course, this is a just a simplified description of each switching type of solid state relays. You can find more information, including application information, by reading 'Switching Principles of Solid State Relays'.
