Inductive or Capacitive Sensors - which to use?

I was reading a great blog from my friends at Pepperl + Fuchs and I'm going to share some of their extensive knowledge on sensors with you.  When you are looking for a proximity sensor for your automation application how do you choose between an inductive sensor and a capacitive sensor?

Inductive sensors detect metal (such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or copper) without touch.  Something important to note is that the P+F  sensors have a different nominal sensing range depending on the material. The standard target is a mild steel plate (FE360) that is 1 mm thick with square dimensions the size of the sensor.  P+F also offers reduction factor 1 sensors that do not have a reduction factor for steel (FE360), stainless steel (304), copper, and aluminum. These have a model number that begins with NRB or NRN.

Capacitive sensors detect anything that is conductive or has a dielectric different from that of air.  These sensors can detect metal; but also plastic, wood and other raw materials.  Typical applications would be the detection of liquids, plastics, and grains. Capacitive liquid detection is used for level and presence detection.

All About Capacitive Proximity Sensors

Let's start with the definition of a proximity sensor. A proximity sensor is a sensor that is able to detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact.

Two popular types of proximity sensors are inductive and capacitive. What's the difference? Inductive proximity sensors are used to detect metal objects, capacitive proximity sensors will sense metal as well as non-metallic materials.

A capacitive proximity sensor  can detect non-metal solids such as paper, glass, powders, cloth and liquids in addition to standard metal objects. Capacitive proximity sensors can even sense presence through certain materials!

To keep this at a basic level I will simplify how they work. When an object nears the sensing surface it changes the capacitance in a circuit. An output is triggered when it reaches a specific level. As the target moves away from the senor it will switch back to its original state.

A popular application for capacitive proximity sensors is level detection through a barrier. Examples would be liquid levels in tanks, pipes and bins or to control pellets and powders in production control.

Marshall Wolf Automation has a full offering of capacitive proximity sensors available from Carlo Gavazzi, Baumer Electric, Pepperl+Fuchs and Autonics. We offer complimentary in-house tech support to help you find the best sensor for your application!
