Today's 'My Automation Education' is going to focus on another niche type product: Antunes JD-2 air
switches. These compact, sensitive Antunes JD-2 switches are made of rugged die-cast aluminum and feature adjustable set point, set-point indication and visible on/off indicator. They’re available in five range scales and deliver the accuracy and reliability you can depend on.
They come in the following range scales that are measured in water column:
◦Grey, 1-4" w.c.(801111302)
◦Red, 1-24" w.c. (801111303)
◦Blue, .07-1.7" w.c. (801111301)
◦Purple, .1-10" w.c. (801111310)
◦Orange, 5-35" w.c. (801111315)
Water column is a measurement of pressure for gases and can be converted to PSI if needed. It is used for measuring small pressure differences across an orifice, or in a pipeline or shaft. Inches of water can be converted to a pressure unit using the formula for pressure head. It is defined as the pressure exerted by a column of water of 1 inch in height at defined conditions.
I have sold quite a few of these the last couple days! Since I had no idea what the heck they were used for I consulted our excellent technical department for an example how they are used. This is the example they gave me:
Imagine you are in a lumber mill that cuts and stacks plywood. There is not enough room in the line to slide the sheets of plywood around, so they need to be lifted straight up. When this process is automated they use suction to move the sheets around. However, because of the way the product is stacked, with its large surface area, there is a pretty strong vacuum that develops, holding the sheets together. In order to separate the sheets a short burst of air is blown between the sheets to break the vacuum, allowing the suction to be one quarter what it otherwise would need to be. The Antunes JD-2 allows for the measurement of the air pressure in the suction hoses to alert the air bursts when the plywood has been picked up so the air is blown at just the right time.
That is one specific example of many where the JD-2 air pressure sensors can be used. Give our tech team a call if you have any questions regarding an application.
