What do earth leakage circuit breakers do? Earth leakage circuit breakers, also called ELCB's and residual current circuit breakers, detect and interrupt earth (ground) faults.
The main purpose when using
earth leakage circuit breakers (ELCB's) is to prevent injury to humans and animals due to electric shock.

Applications include ground fault protection of equipment (GFPE) and fire prevention by limiting the energy of a fault to less than the minimum ignition energy for many materials.
